The study divided subjects into three groups. One group exercised at high intensity for an hour before bed, the second did the same at low intensity, and the third sat and read.

Another study showed that exercise within two hours of bedtime either improved or had no effect on sleep for most people.

Since evening is often the most convenient time to fit in some regular physical activity, these findings come as welcome news. "The key is to make some kind of exercise part of your day," O'Connor tells New Choices, "and do it whenever you have time."
