DSU/CSU (Digital (or Data) Service Unit/Channel Service Unit) A pair of communications devices that connect an inhouse line to an external digital circuit (T1, DDS, etc.).  with synchronous data compression designed to optimize throughput over 56 kbps Frame Relay Circuits. The announcement was made at the Networld+Interop Trade Show in Las Vegas.

The DSU III ARc is based on the recently announced TIA/EIA 655 specification for compression of bit-formatted synchronous data over point-to-point digital circuits. By incorporating the Frame Relay Forum's Implementation Agreement FRF FRF

.9, the DSU III ARc supports compression over multiple permanent virtual circuits. Each unit is capable of supporting compression on up to three PVCs, with an unlimited number of transparent PVCs supported. The DSU III ARc is also compatible with non-compression DSUs for use in existing networks. This feature allows compressing DSUs to be installed on circuits that require increased throughput while maintaining overall network interoperability.

According to Gary Culp, design engineer at ADTRAN, the DSU III ARc automatically selects the DLCIs to compress based on the LMI, Annex A of Annex D status messages. This feature allows the units to be installed in new or existing Frame Relay Networks with minimal additional setup or configuration. A manual mode of configuration is also available to allow users to select which PVCs to compress.

In addition to the DSU III ARc, ADTRAN also announced Frame Relay support for the DSU III DBUc, the industry's first DDS DSU/CSU to incorporate synchronous data compression as well as ISDN ISDN
