Digital telecommunications network that operates over standard copper telephone wires or other media.
Service Unit with integrated network termination, providing data transmission rates of up to 128 kbps.

ADTRAN will unveil the new unit at the fall COMDEX The former, premier computer trade show in the U.S. Although it grew into an end user event, it was originally created for dealers and distributors (it was the COMputer Dealers EXposition).  trade show in booth number I-100.

The ISU 128 Rackmount is designed for use in the ADTRAN SMART 16 Shelf, providing convenient mounting for up to 16 communication devices. Designed for larger host site areas, the Shelf has an intelligent controller card designed to configure and control the card units installed in the shelf and up to 15 additional shelves. The SMART 16 Shelf can house a variety of products including ISUs, DSU/CSUs and T1 CSU/DSUs.

The ISU 128 Rackmount can be viewed as an ``ISDN modem'' allowing cost-effective high-speed data transmission using standard ISDN Basic Rate service. The ISU 128 Rackmount interoperates with Switched 56 DSUs as well as various ISDN terminal adapters and Inverse Multiplexers. The unit is optionally equipped with V.32 bis/V.42 bis modem interoperability.

``The ISU 128 Rackmount installed in a SMART 16 Shelf satisfies those applications where multiple communications devices are required at a central site, such as modem pooling, internet access, and host data center applications,'' ADTRAN ISDN Product Manager Leslie Conway said. ``Because the ISU is designed to interoperate with analog modems, Switched 56 DSUs, ISDN terminal adapters and other ISUs, the central site can now use one system to serve users' various communications needs.''

Price & Availability

The ISU 128 Rackmount is priced at $920 and is available immediately. The ISU Rackmount with V.32 bis/V.42 modem will be available in the first quarter of 1995. The SMART 16 Shelf is priced at $1,295 and is currently available.

Technical Details

This unit is an ISDN terminal adapter and is available with an optional integrated NT1. The ISU 128 transmits data over an RS-232, V.35 or RS-530 interface and performs at synchronous data Synchronous data

Configuration of the unit is achieved using the SMART 16 Shelf controller card, which can be configured two ways: through the use of an RS-232 port providing a VT-100 compatible ASCII terminal interface or by using Datamate, an optional hand-held control unit providing a 2x16 LCD display and key pad. For network testing, the ISU 128 Rackmount responds to loopback commands from the telephone company central office.
