ADTRAN Unveils ATLAS 800 Integrated Access System; Industry's Most Extensive Support of Dedicated Bandwidth Management and Access Switching Optimizing Wide Area Network Services in a Single Platform.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 24, 1997--ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ NASDAQ

), a leading supplier of transmission products for high-speed digital communications, has introduced an Integrated Access System with the most extensive support of dedicated bandwidth management and access switching in the industry. The ADTRAN TotaL Access System, ATLAS, is a modular, highly scaleable platform that provides robust solutions addressing the wide area communication needs of medium to large corporations as well as network access providers.

ATLAS allows the user to consolidate voice, data, and video applications into a single platform, thereby optimizing wide area bandwidth and reducing equipment costs. Its scaleable design supports T3 rates while the chassis' eight expansion slots allow for a variety of application modules, making it one of the most versatile access systems on the market.

Marketing. "It's a powerful host-site access platform that leverages our product breadth and technical expertise and provides our customers with a total, integrated end-to-end solution that will grow with them into the next century."

The initial member of the ATLAS family is the ATLAS 800, which will function as a Digital Access Cross-Connect System (DACS DACS Data & Analysis Center for Software

), an ISDN Access Switch, a T1 Bandwidth Manager, and a Remote Access Multiplexer - each competitively positioned on its own but applicable in any combination. The ATLAS 800 delivers superior performance and functional integration at a significantly lower cost than competitive products often as much as 50 percent less than others, depending on configuration. The ATLAS architecture is designed to optimize users' present environment and provide a migration path to future technologies while protecting their investment in existing equipment.

Windham noted that over the next year, additional ATLAS technology introductions will include Remote Access Concentration, Frame Relay, T3, and E1. Because of the modular architecture, emerging technologies such as ATM and xDSL can easily be added to the ATLAS portfolio.

Scaleable, Modular, and Flexible Architecture

The ATLAS 800 architecture includes a packet switching and a circuit switching bussing scheme. The result is a highly scaleable system capable of supporting bandwidth requirements up to 34 T1/E1 or Primary Rate ISDN circuits. The ATLAS base unit provides two network interfaces each independently configurable for T1, DSX-1 or PRI PRI: see Institutional Revolutionary party.

operation; eight expansion module slots to support a variety of applications; and a 10baseT connection for remote access and network management.

Application modules in the initial release include a Quad T1/PRI/DSX-1 module, an Octal Basic Rate ISDN module, and a Quad Nx56/64 V.35 module. Additional modules near term include an Analog/ISDN Modem module that supports sixteen 56k analog and sixteen ISDN calls simultaneously, a 16-port EIA (Electronic Industries Alliance, Arlington, VA, www.eia.org) A membership organization founded in 1924 as the Radio Manufacturing Association. It sets standards for consumer products and electronic components.  232 serial module, a T3 interface module, and a redundant power supply module.

Digital Access Cross-Connect System (DACS)

Inherent in the ATLAS 800 architecture is the ability to cross connect, or DACS, up to 34 T1 circuits. DACSing allows the assignment and redistribution of any DS0 on any T1 circuit to any other DS0 on any of the 34 T1 circuits in the system. For optimizing network resources, dedicated connection maps can be invoked manually or automatically based on the time of day and day of the week. The ATLAS DACS leads the market in price/performance.

ISDN Access Switch

The ATLAS 800 includes an advanced access switching architecture for routing dial-up calls to specific ports or DS0s. As an access switch functioning in a user-to-network and user-to-user mode, ATLAS consolidates multiple BRI See ISDN.

ATLAS also converts between ISDN PRI and T1 robbed bit signaling A signaling method in a T1 circuit that uses bits from each of the 24 DS-0 channels. Network Management

ATLAS 800 provides a number of network management options, including MIB (1) (Management Information Base) The hierarchical database used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP) to describe the particular device being monitored. MIB objects are identified using ASN.1 syntax. See SNMP, RMON, OID and ASN.1.  II-compliant SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. . VT 100 and Telnet support are also offered, providing detailed system configuration through an easy-to-use menu system. T-Watch PRO, ADTRAN's GUI management system that runs on Microsoft(R) Windows, can also be used to allow end-to-end management with downstream ADTRAN T1 products.
