2 (T1.418) standard, is taking the lead in the development of the technology's four-wire counterpart, HDSL4. The new technology complements HDSL2 by extending reach to customer circuits that extend beyond the CSA (1) (Canadian Standards Association, Toronto, Ontario, www.csa.ca) A standards-defining organization founded in 1919. It is involved in many industries, including electronics, communications and information technology.  range.

HDSL4 is optimized for DS1 transport and allows repeatered deployment for additional reach while maintaining full compliance with the Spectrum Management Standard (T1.417). The T1.417 standard specifies an allowable level of crosstalk that new technologies may generate when deployed with ADSL See DSL.

"Extending the reach of DS1 service delivery in a spectrally friendly manner is essential to local service providers. HDSL4 promises to be a great alternative," said Tom Starr of SBC.

ADTRAN was heavily involved in the development of the HDSL2 standard, which was approved in year 2000. ADTRAN is presently serving as editor for Issue 2 of that standard, which will define HDSL4.

"Through our leadership in the HDSL2 and G.shdsl standard developments, ADTRAN has demonstrated its commitment to developing fully-functional, open industry standards. In order to promote the expedient and complete development of the HDSL4 standard, we felt it was important to accept the responsibility of editorship for Issue 2 of T1.418. We are actively working to complete the standard and expect it to be finalized later this year," said Kevin Schneider, ADTRAN's VP of Technology.

ADTRAN offers a full line of HDSL4 products including H4TU-Cs, HDSL4 repeaters, and H4TU-Rs, all designed for easy upgrade from HDSL 2B1Q or traditional T1 services. Supported form factors include ADTRAN's Total Access broadband access platform, C.I./Wescom 3192, WECO 220, and Lucent DDM (Distributed Data Management) Software in an IBM SNA environment that allows users to access data in remote files within the network. DDM works with IBM's LU 6.2 session to provide peer-to-peer communications and file sharing. See also distributed database.  Plus.
