) new FRF.16 Multilink Frame Relay Protocol. This brings added capability to the device, which also features service level agreement verification and the ability to identify bandwidth intensive applications through network monitoring.

Multilink Frame Relay is a newly adopted standard for Frame Relay inverse multiplexing over standard T1 circuits. The FRF created Multilink Frame Relay in response to the continued success of Frame Relay as a proven, widely available, low latency, and secure access service technology. Multilink Frame Relay is based off the FRF.16 standard and provides a means to allow support for splitting a high-speed stream of Frame Relay traffic over multiple Frame Relay interfaces.

The IQ 710 is an intelligent Frame Relay-aware traffic management platform. It connects a router to a Frame Relay network, gathering and reporting useful data regarding usage of the wide area circuit. Its modular design provides two expansion slots for network interface and dial backup modules. It can be equipped with either a 56/64k, T1/FT1, T1/FT1 with DSX-1, or a Dual T1 (supporting FRF.16) network interface option module, giving users the ability to migrate to higher speed networks as their needs increase. The unit supports a variety of optional dial back-up modules such as ISDN ISDN

 and V.34.

"The IQ 710 is the first performance monitoring device to achieve compliance with this new Frame Relay standard," according to Tim Saunders, ADTRAN vice president of product management, Enterprise Networks Division. "Interoperability with this important new standard now allows IT managers to monitor bandwidths from 56 Kbps to 3 Mbps, making it a must for corporate networks."

In addition to the Layer 1, 2, and 3 statistics that current IQ devices capture, the IQ 710 automatically monitors traffic by discovering applications running on the network and the amount of bandwidth that each consumes. This traffic monitoring provides more visibility into network issues, by reporting the usage of applications such as FTP, Telnet, E-mail, databases, corporate-wide ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) An integrated information system that serves all departments within an enterprise. The IQ 710 also measures application response time and determines overall network efficiency by tracking the number of retransmissions that occur in the network due to congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.

 or other factors.

The IQ 710 has list prices ranging from $1,295 to $2,295 depending on the network interface module supplied. The Dual T1 Network Interface Module supporting Multilink Frame Relay has a list price of $995 and will be available in December.
