G.shdsl is the draft ITU standard (G.991.2) for Symmetric High Bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line (communications, protocol) High bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line - (HDSL) A form of Digital Subscriber Line, providing T1 or E1 connections over two or three twisted-pair copper lines, respectively.  (SHDSL) technology. Carriers deploying G.shdsl will be able to deliver symmetric data rates up to 2.3 Mbps over a single copper pair at distances 15 - 20% greater than current 2B1Q-based SDSL See DSL.

SDSL - Single-line Digital Subscriber Line
 technology. G.shdsl's spectral compatibility means no binder group restrictions, making it much easier for carriers to deploy. Also, G.shdsl works well over existing copper lines with all impairments and impedances, reducing the need for costly truck dispatches.

ADTRAN's G.shdsl deployment solution consists of two components: Total Access 3000 configured as a DSL Access Multiplexer (DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor) A central office (CO) device for ADSL service that intermixes voice traffic and DSL traffic onto a customer's DSL line. It also separates incoming phone and data signals and directs them onto the appropriate carrier's network. See DSL. ) with ADTRAN's new 8-port G.shdsl access module, and Total Access 850 Integrated Access Device An IAD is a customer premises device that provides access to wide area networks and the Internet. Specifically, it aggregates multiple channels of information including voice and data across a single shared access link to a carrier or service provider PoP (Point of Presence).  (IAD). The Total Access System with G.shdsl provides carriers a flexible, modular, end-to-end solution that extends DSL reach, is spectrally compatible with other DSLs, and is interoperable for guaranteed operation in multivendor environments.

ADTRAN's new 8-port G.shdsl Access Module will be its fifth generation of products using TC PAM line coding, the same line coding adopted for HDSL See DSL.

2. The G.shdsl module is compatible with both ATM and Frame Relay networks. Configured with twenty-eight, 8-port G.shdsl Access Modules, Total Access 3000 will support 224 subscriber line interfaces in six inches of rack space. Compact enough to fit easily into a crowded Central Office (CO) or Remote Terminal (RT), and with enough capacity to handle rapidly expanding DSL service requirements, Total Access 3000 will significantly reduce deployment costs and increase revenue opportunities. Since it is temperature-hardened, it can be deployed in a wide variety of outside plant enclosures. The modular, scalable design of the Total Access System carries over to the Total Access 850 IAD, which will make supporting G.shdsl as simple as swapping a card.
