ADTRAN Announces G.shdsl Customer Premises Equipment.Business Editors & Technology Writers DSLcon Spring 2001 Booth No. 511 HUNTSVILLE, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 2001 G.shdsl DSU 1. (communications) DSU - Data Service Unit. 2. DSU - Disk Subsystem Unit (Artecon). 3. (humour) DSU - Dwarf Storage Unit. Provides ATM Network Connectivity to Legacy Frame Relay Equipment ADTRAN, Inc. (Nasdaq:ADTN ADTN Administrative Data Transmission Network ADTN Administrative Data Telecommunications Network ), the market leader in G.shdsl, the latest in DSL-based local loop access technologies, today introduced the Express 6503 G.shdsl DSU. This data-only unit allows carriers to deliver legacy Frame Relay services over G.shdsl circuits. The Express 6503 provides the Frame Relay to ATM conversion required to transport the customer's Frame Relay traffic over the carrier's ATM backbone. G.shdsl supports symmetric data rates up to 2.3 Mbps over a single copper pair and is rate adaptive, giving customers the maximum data rate supported by their lines. The Express 6503 is a V.35/X.21 to G.shdsl data service unit designed for small offices and branch offices to provide cost-effective access to high-speed G.shdsl services. The Express equipment preserves customers' investments in existing business class routers, allowing them to take advantage of new DSL service offerings. "The Express 6503 offers an excellent cost-effective migration path to DSL, allowing customers to take advantage of the benefits of G.shdsl without having to replace existing networking equipment," ADTRAN Product Manager Joe McClain said. "As the industry leader in T1/E1 and DDS (1) (Digital Data Storage) See DAT. (2) (Data Dictionary System) See QuickBuild and OpenDDS. (3) (Dataphone Digital S DSUs/CSUs, ADTRAN introduces the G.shdsl DSU as the next logical step for our product lines." The Express 6503 G.shdsl DSU allows DSL services and applications to be connected to the office router. It includes an integrated G.shdsl WAN interface and a synchronous serial interface for connection to the customer's equipment and can operate at symmetric speeds of up to 2.3 Mbps. The unit is equipped with both V.35 and X.21 synchronous serial ports and supports Frame Relay Forum standards FRF FRF The ISO 4217 currency code for the French Franc. .5 (Frame Relay to ATM Network Internetworking) and FRF.8 (Frame Relay to ATM Service Internetworking). ADTRAN's early leadership in developing the G.shdsl standard is a primary reason for its readiness to deliver products. The company pioneered much of the technology leading to the G.shdsl standard with over 90 technical contributions. Approval of the standard by the ITU-T See ITU. ITU-T - International Telecommunications Union in early February cleared the way for service providers worldwide to deploy the technology, which combines the spectral, reach, and interoperability benefits of ANSI (American National Standards Institute, New York, www.ansi.org) A membership organization founded in 1918 that coordinates the development of U.S. voluntary national standards in both the private and public sectors. It is the U.S. member body to ISO and IEC. HDSL See DSL. SDSL See DSL. SDSL - Single-line Digital Subscriber Line . As previously announced, ADTRAN partnered with Infineon Technologies to develop the G.shdsl transceiver set used in its Express 6503, as well as related products scheduled for introduction this year. Since the G.shdsl chip set is compliant with the international standards, customers are assured of interoperability with compliant products from any vendor. Other ADTRAN G.shdsl products for carriers and enterprises include integrated access devices, data-only access devices, and line cards for ADTRAN's Total Access(R) broadband access platform. The Express 6503 will have a list price of $795 and is expected to be available by June 2001.
