), a major technical contributor to the international G.shdsl (G.991.2) standard, today announced that production shipments of the first member of ADTRAN's G.shdsl product family - the Express 6530 Network Termination Unit - have begun. Early product availability will speed the deployment of standards-based, high-speed data networks, allowing service providers to take advantage of the technology's rate/reach advantages.

ADTRAN's early leadership in the G.shdsl standard is a primary reason for its readiness to deliver products. The company pioneered much of the technology leading to the standard and led the development of the standard with over 90 technical contributions. Approval of the standard by the ITU-T See ITU.

ITU-T - International Telecommunications Union
in early February cleared the way for service providers worldwide to deploy the technology, which combines the spectral, reach, and interoperability benefits of ANSI (American National Standards Institute, New York, www.ansi.org) A membership organization founded in 1918 that coordinates the development of U.S. voluntary national standards in both the private and public sectors. It is the U.S. member body to ISO and IEC.  HDSL See DSL.

. As previously announced, ADTRAN partnered with Infineon Technologies to develop the G.shdsl chip set used in its Express 6530, as well as related products scheduled for introduction this year. Since the G.shdsl chip set is fully compliant with the international standards, customers are assured of interoperability with compliant products from any vendor.

"ADTRAN has long recognized the industry's need to harmonize ETSI SDSL and ANSI HDSL2 into a breakthrough technology," said Tom Stanton, Vice President and General Manager of ADTRAN's Carrier Networks Division. "G.shdsl delivers symmetric rates up to 2.3 Mbps over a single copper pair at up to 30 percent greater distances and at a 35 to 45 percent higher data rate than 2B1Q-based SDSL. Its TC-PAM TC-PAM Trellis Coded Pulse Amplitude Modulation  modulation technique, which ADTRAN helped to develop for HDSL2, ensures spectral compatibility with other DSLs deployed in the same binder group. We believe that G.shdsl will be the most successful DSL targeted at the small- to medium-sized business market."

In an effort to promote G.shdsl, ADTRAN supports and participates in the efforts of the SHDSL Consortium at the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Lab to foster industry-wide interoperability. ADTRAN also promotes the technology through participation in the DSL Forum and was a charter sponsor of the informational website, www.shdsl.org.

ADTRAN G.shdsl Products

The Express 6530, ADTRAN's first G.shdsl product, terminates a G.shdsl circuit delivered by a service provider. The platform enables the transport of voice and data from a customer's premises at data rates up to 2.3 Mbps. Other ADTRAN G.shdsl products for carriers and enterprises will include integrated access devices, data-only access devices, and line cards for ADTRAN's broadband access platform.
