ADTRAN's Total Access 850 system is a next-generation carrier-class IAD that benefits communications providers who require a customer premises device to integrate voice and data functions. The Total Access 850 system offers superior features and unparalleled flexibility, such as IP/IPX routing supporting Frame Relay and PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) The most popular method for transporting IP packets over a serial link between the user and the ISP. Developed in 1994 by the IETF and superseding the SLIP protocol, PPP establishes the session between the user's computer and the ISP using , FXO and FXS interfaces for analog voice, and DSX-1 for digital voice.
