) today announces a new version of the ADTRAN Operating System (OS), version 4.1, that adds Virtual Private Networking (VPN) to the low-cost, access router alternative, the NetVanta(TM) 3000 Series. This new ADTRAN OS upgrade expands market opportunities by allowing businesses of all sizes to secure corporate connectivity using the public Internet with standard-based IPSec protocols and various encryption algorithms like DES, 3DES, and AES. When equipped with the ADTRAN OS upgrade, the NetVanta 3000 Series of access routers interoperates with other IPSec based products including ADTRAN's NetVanta 2000 Series of dedicated VPN/Firewall appliances and the NetVanta VPN software client.

"There are two schools of thought when it comes to implementing Virtual Private Networks," said Tim Saunders, vice president product management, ADTRAN Enterprise Networks Division. "Some users want a dedicated appliance to perform VPN and firewall functions, separate from the access router. Others prefer a single box solution that performs all the functions. Either way, ADTRAN can now satisfy both requirements. The NetVanta 2000 Series is a dedicated VPN/Firewall platform, while the NetVanta 3000 Series is an access device that can terminate the wide area circuit, and perform all routing, firewall, and VPN functions."

The new 4.1 version of the ADTRAN OS introduces an Enhanced Feature Pack, which is an upgrade to the Standard Feature Pack and includes all the VPN functionality described. The NetVanta 3305 equipped with the Enhanced Feature Pack includes a hardware encryption accelerator and acts as an Internet security gateway supporting up to 100 private encrypted communication tunnels. The NetVanta 3200 and 3205 devices loaded with the ADTRAN OS Enhanced Feature Pack support an unlimited number of users and up to five simultaneous private encrypted communication tunnels.

The ADTRAN OS Standard Feature Pack is the default operating system for all the NetVanta 3000 routers and includes standard features such as a stateful inspection firewall to protect the corporate infrastructure, familiar Command Line Interface (CLI) to reduce training, and standards based implementations of Frame Relay, PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) The most popular method for transporting IP packets over a serial link between the user and the ISP. Developed in 1994 by the IETF and superseding the SLIP protocol, PPP establishes the session between the user's computer and the ISP using , OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) A routing protocol that determines the best path for routing IP traffic over a TCP/IP network based on distance between nodes and several quality parameters. , and RIP. It also features NAT/NAPT for IP address concealment and conservation, and DHCP server and client for automatic and flexible IP address assignment. Dual flash memory locations allow two full versions of the ADTRAN OS to coexist on the same device which simplifies adoption of newly released versions.
