ADTRAN(R), Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN) today announced a new member of the IQ family of performance monitoring access devices, the IQ 710. This product not only performs standard service level agreement verification, but also monitors applications on the network to identify bandwidth abusers.

The IQ 710 is an intelligent Frame Relay-aware traffic management platform. It connects a router to a Frame Relay network, gathering and reporting useful data regarding usage of the wide area circuit. Its modular design provides two expansion slots for network interface and dial backup modules. It can be equipped with either a 56/64k, T1/FT1, or T1/FT1 with DSX-1 network interface option module, giving users the ability to migrate to higher speed networks as their needs increase. The unit supports a variety of optional dial back-up modules such as ISDN and V.34.

"For little more than the cost of a traditional CSU/DSU, the IQ 710 provides invaluable information about bandwidth utilization," according to Tim Saunders, ADTRAN vice president of product management, Enterprise Networks Division. "Users can not only determine if they have too much or too little bandwidth, but also can learn if their bandwidth is being used for the purpose it was intended."

Traffic monitoring provides more visibility into network issues, by reporting the usage of applications such as FTP, Telnet, E-mail, databases, corporate-wide ERP systems, RealAudio, MPEG, web traffic, and hundreds of others. In addition to the Layer 1, 2, and 3 statistics that current IQ devices capture, the IQ 710 automatically discovers applications running on the network and the amount of bandwidth that each consumes. The IQ 710 also measures application response time and determines overall network efficiency by tracking the number of retransmissions that occur in the network due to congestion or other factors.

In addition to performance monitoring, the IQ 710 will offer upgrades for traffic shaping. Traffic shaping gives the user the ability to control the bandwidth based on the application to more efficiently use the WAN bandwidth.

The IQ 710 is complemented by ADTRAN's N-Form network management software suite. N-Form is a modular, Java-enabled, Windows-based platform, which combines the features of a complete SNMP management platform with a network trend analysis tool, in one easy-to-use, cost-effective package. With N-Form, the IQ 710 can be configured remotely through a graphical interface, monitor alarm conditions and report on both Frame Relay and Application monitoring metrics in either graphical or tabular formats.

The IQ 710 will be available in July, 2001, with list prices ranging from $1,295 to $2,095 depending on the network interface module supplied.
