ADS PLANNED ON IDENTIFYING GANG ACTIVITY.

Byline: Lisa Mascaro Daily News Staff Writer

If parents are concerned their youngsters are becoming involved with gangs, they might not have to look any further than the television for clues.

A series of public service announcements designed to give parents information about potential signs of gang involvement among young people is being planned for local airing by the city's Youth Council.

The Youth Council plans to begin drafting a script for the 30-second spots, and hopes to begin production on the commercials after the ideas are approved at the council's next meeting later this month.

The students, who have been working with the city's gang unit, say parents are often unaware of the signs that show a young person is becoming involved with a gang.

``I think it might be helpful to have the parents have something to look for,'' said Sandra Thompson Sandra Smith "Sandy" Thompson (born ca. 1947) is a veteran Louisiana politician and state administrator, who retired on August 3, 2007, from the directorship of the Atchafalaya Basin Program. The teens hope that parents will ``get help (for their children) before they get too deep into it.''

Information about clothing styles, attitude changes and tag signs that could signal to parents that a youngster is becoming involved in gangs will be discussed in the 30-second spots.

Caldwell, the student leader of the council, hopes that both parents and teens will tune in and learn more about gangs so they can make informed choices.

She added that TV was a natural medium for the young people to get the message out to families.

``A lot of people watch TV,'' Caldwell said. ``I hope it works.''
