ADS INTRODUCES FIRST USB ETHERNET ADAPTER FOR RETAIL MARKET

ADS Technologies Inc., San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay. , Calif., a leader in USB USB
 in full Universal Serial Bus

Type of serial bus that allows peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, digitizers, data gloves, etc.) to be easily connected to a computer.
hardware, has introduced the first USB-Ethernet adapter for the retail market. The "USB to Ethernet" instantly connects USB PCs to a network.

Features

The USB to Ethernet will let consumers add a PC to a network without shutting down the PC or taking off the case. The users will simply plug in the adapter like any other USB device. This eliminates the need to install a network card (NIC (1) (Network Interface Card) See network adapter. See also InterNIC.

).

The small adapter plugs into a USB port A USB socket on a computer or peripheral device into which a USB cable is plugged. See USB.  and a network cable. The network cable is typically plugged into an Ethernet hub A device that all lines on an Ethernet segment are plugged into. 10Base-T and 100Base-T Ethernets are star networks and require a hub for operation. The earlier 10Base5 and 10Base2 Ethernets are bus networks, but are often wired into a star configuration using a central hub for improved  or server. The cables, hubs, servers and PCs make up a computer network.

The USB to Ethernet supports 10 Base-T Ethernet and provides 10 Mbps throughput. The adapter is compatible with both desktops and notebooks. The device is hot-swappable, so users do not have to spend time logging on to a network.

"The USB to Ethernet makes adding PCs to a network like plugging in a lamp," said Mike McCoy The name Mike McCoy may refer to two former NFL players with the Green Bay Packers:
  • Mike McCoy (defensive back)
  • Mike McCoy (defensive tackle)
, president of ADS.

Potential Markets

Possible users include anyone wanting to easily add PCs to a network, such as mobile users, systems administrators and small-office users. Mobile users should be especially interested, because the adapter is easier to install and has greater throughput than network PC cards.

Availability and Pricing

The USB to Ethernet will be available at the end of September through ADS Technologies' resellers, retailers and distributors. The product's street price will be $89.

What Is USB?

USB technology greatly simplifies the process of adding peripherals to PCs. There is one standard port, where the peripheral is plugged in externally; the PC automatically detects the peripheral and begins the installation. For more information on USB, visit www.usb.org.
