Enabling USB Growth

The inexpensive USB Ports, also known as USB host devices, combined with full USB support in the Windows 98, Mac OS 8.5, and Solaris 2.7 operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. , could dramatically increase the number of computers with USB. The number of PCs without USB ports, which could upgrade, numbers in the millions. More USB-ready computers will, in turn, help generate demand for more USB peripherals.

What is USB?

USB (Universal Serial Bus) technology is a new way of adding peripherals such as printers, monitors, and modems to PCs. It greatly simplifies the process of adding peripherals. There is one standard port, the peripheral is plugged in externally, the PC automatically detects the peripheral, and begins the installation.

Compatibility with Solaris and Mac Operating Systems

Both USB Ports are based on the OHCI OHCI - Open Host Controller Interface  (Open Host Controller Interface A host controller interface is a register level interface which allows a host controller for USB or FireWire to communicate with the operating system of a personal computer. ). OHCI compatibility gives the ports the competitive advantage of being compatible with the Mac and Solaris operating systems. Other host products support only Windows 98.
