Major new features in CSS 6.0 include Autolink, a new proprietary connection providing seamless Windows-based integration with ADP's service payroll and other value-added services; a customized version of ReportSmith for querying and report-writing; an enhanced graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI)

; a new model for payroll data entry; additional HR functionality; and new platform support for the HP 9000 and Oracle 7.1.

The first shipments of CSS 6.0 will go to five clients at the end of April, covering diverse hardware and software platforms and functional content. The clients include Jones Intercable Jones Intercable was a Cable TV company founded by Glenn Jones. Jones, already a cable television veteran, bought his first cable system in Georgetown, Colorado after taking a $400 loan on his Volkswagen.

In 1993 30% of the company was purchased by BCI Telecom Holdings, Ltd.
Inc. of Englewood, Colo. through its data management and electronic publishing company, Jones Interactive Inc.

"The product is a step in the right direction," said Rob Wilkinson, vice president of Jones Interactive Inc. "The Autolink part of the product addresses the level of functionality we've been looking for Looking for

"We've spent time researching and testing CSS and listening to our customers," said Dan Drechsel, ADP's vice president of National Accounts Marketing. "Version 6.0 fulfills ADP's vision of a technologically-advanced, easy-to-use, fully-integrated client/server HRMS that gives our clients direct control over all their own data, while still offering the choice of on-site or service payroll.

"CSS 6.0 is significant because the market wants to outsource payroll while maintaining responsibility for HR and benefits," Drechsel added.

CSS is a fast-growing software product and HRMS solution within ADP's National Accounts Division. It currently has more than 75 users in the U.S. with nearly 30 in production.

New Features

The new Autolink connection to ADP's Autopay II payroll service also gives clients full access to ADP's other value-added services, including Tax Filing, Direct Deposit, and Unemployment Cost Management. All of these services are available on an outsourced basis while clients still manage all their own data in their own system.

Data and computations generated by those services -- including payroll details and flexible benefits deductions from the latest check run -- are automatically returned and integrated into the client's system, where they are immediately available for user queries and reporting.

"Autolink is a two-way connection that keeps all processing within the client/server architecture," Drechsel said. "Only clients of CSS will get this seamless Windows-based functionality. While we allow the clients of other HRMS vendors to connect to Autopay II, only CSS users will enjoy the benefits of Autolink."

For reporting, the new release incorporates the fully-integrated and customized version of the award-winning ReportSmith, the powerful and popular query and reportwriting tool.

The new version also has an enhanced graphical user interface with full support for the 3-D elements in Microsoft Windows 3.1 and other features. CSS will support Windows 95, when that product is available.

Rapid Paydata entry is another new feature of Version 6.0. Based on the spreadsheet model, it facilitates user controlled fast entry pay data with intelligent validation by the system.

Version 6.0 also includes new functionality to support the processing of liens and deductions for child support, tax levies, and wage garnishments.

Support for the HP 9000 running the Oracle relational database under HP-UX HP's version of Unix that runs on its 9000 family. It is based on SVID and incorporates features from BSD Unix along with several HP innovations.

was previously announced in February as part of a new business alliance with Hewlett-Packard. The two companies will work to expand the use of CSS on HP's popular midrange platforms through joint marketing and sales efforts. "It's part of our commitment to offer a broad choice of the most popular platforms for CSS," Drechsel said.

Version 6.0 also includes support for the latest version of Oracle's popular relational database Oracle 7.1. As a member of the Oracle Business Alliance Program, ADP will support Oracle 7.1 on the HP 9000, IBM's RS/6000 under AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) IBM's Unix-based operating system which runs on its Intellistation workstations and pSeries, p5, iSeries and i5 server families. , and Oracle Novell Netware NLM Software that runs in a NetWare server. Although NetWare servers store DOS and Windows applications, they do not execute them. All programs that run in a NetWare server must be compiled into the NLM format. They are typically written in C and use Novell's libraries.  for Intel-based machines. Service and Product Discriminators

CSS is a full-featured HRMS offering complete HR administration, benefits and payroll information at the client's site accessible through Microsoft Windows. CSS also offers three unique options that other software vendors often don't provide:

o A choice of payroll processing either at the client's site with CSS Payroll or fully connected to ADP's Autopay II payroll service through the proprietary Autolink.

o A unique pricing structure that replaces large up-front licensing fees with a low monthly support and license fee, which also includes software upgrades, substantially lowering the cost of entry into the client/server arena.

o Various levels of support services support services Psychology Non-health care-related ancillary services–eg, transportation, financial aid, support groups, homemaker services, respite services, and other services  to reduce the long implementation times historically associated with client/server applications. CSS Fast Track and CSS Fast Link are service packages that can assure clients basic implementation in from three to nine months, compared to an industry average of 12-18 months. ADP and its implementation partners also offer other levels of support.

Availability and Pricing

CSS Version 6.0 is scheduled for general release in September. It will be available on the following server platforms: Oracle on the IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  RS/6000 under AIX and on the HP 9000 under HP-UX, Gupta SQLBase under OS/2 and Gupta and Oracle Novell Netware NLM on Intel platforms. A version for Sybase SQL Server Sybase SQL Server - Adaptive Server Enterprise  is scheduled for later release. CSS is service-priced according to the hardware and database platform and the number of employees, with prices starting at $3,000 per month.

Product Features

CSS is composed of four comprehensive, fully-integrated software modules: CS Human Resources, CS Benefits Administration, CS Flexible Spending Accounts flexible spending account,

The monthly support and license fee includes hotline telephone support, remote diagnostics and connection to the CSS bulletin board on Lotus Notes. For more information about ADP's Client Server Series, call 800/225-5237, ext 145.
