               ADM NAMES BUFFETT AS SUCCESSOR TO BURKET
    DECATUR, Ill., Jan. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The Archer Daniels Midland

Company (NYSE: ADM) today named Howard G. Buffett to the position of corporate vice president and assistant to the chairman. He will assume the responsibilities formerly managed by the late Richard E. Burket.

    Buffett, president of Buffett Farms, Inc., has been actively involved in the production of corn and soybeans on a family-owned farm near Omaha, Neb., since 1984.  From 1984-1988 he held the office of first vice president, Essex Corporation, Omaha, and was chairman of the Nebraska Ethanol Authority and Development Board from 1989-1991. He currently serves as chairman of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners.
    Elected to the board of directors of ADM in 1991, Buffett will continue to fill the position left vacant by the resignation of Robert Strauss to become U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union.  Ambassador Carla A. Hills last year appointed Buffett to serve on the United States Trade Representative's Intergovernmental Policy Advisory Committee on Trade. The committee, composed of governors, state legislators and local officials, counsels the USTR on international trade policy matters and regularly advises the Congress on the USTR multilateral negotiations' possible influence on state and local government.
    Buffett serves on the board of directors of Mainline Oxyfuels, an energy development company; FirsTier Bank Omaha, a major lending institution in Nebraska; and the Corporation for International Trade, an affiliate of the Chamber Federation with trade offices in Moscow, C.I.S., and Naucalpan, Mexico.
