ADL unveils second generation intelligent library products at UNIX Expo '96.NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 11, 1996--MediaLogic ADL Inc., developer of the industry's premiere scalable library solutions, will showcase its second-generation, breakthrough line of intelligent automated storage libraries at UNIX UNIX Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics). Expo, October 8-10 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, Booth 1976. ADL's new generation of Scalable Library Architecture (SLA (1) (StereoLithography Apparatus) See 3D printing. (2) (Service Level Agreement) A contract between the provider and the user that specifies the level of service expected during its term. ) products incorporate enhancements suggested by early customer testing and refinement of the initial design. The result is a more intelligent, more powerful storage platform -- able to accommodate the new generation of applications requiring intelligent library features, such as data cartridge (1) A cartridge used to hold computer data. See cartridge. (2) (Data Cartridge) A 5.25" QIC-style magnetic tape technology that originally used the DC-6000 model designation. SSA uses SCSI commands, allowing existing software to drive SSA peripherals, which are typically disk drives. connect. MediaLogic ADL developed the SLA products for these advanced storage applications by incorporating a design philosophy geared toward the intelligent data handling and data access requirements of network storage environments, and not simply aimed to meet a capacity target. By adopting the SLA intelligent data handling approach, SLA technology brings a range of benefits to library customers never before available. Hot-Swapping The SLA-8 family and all SLA products feature proprietary hot swap To pull out a component from a system and plug in a new one while the main power is still on. Also called "hot plug" and "hot insertion," hot swap is a feature of USB devices, allowing an external drive, network adapter or other peripheral to be plugged in without having to power down the and configuration re-direction features that allow drives to be replaced or additional drives to be installed while the other drives continue to operate unimpeded unimpeded Adjective not stopped or disrupted by anything Adj. 1. unimpeded - not slowed or prevented; "a time of unimpeded growth"; "an unimpeded sweep of meadows and hills afforded a peaceful setting" , avoiding re-booting of servers due to component failure (a time-consuming process). The result is nearly 100 percent up time and uninterrupted data availability that is unmatched by competitive products. Data accessibility is further enhanced by the scalable design that increases the data handling capability of the library as more drives are added. Each drive includes an attached media loader so that any of up to 65 tape cartridges in the 4mm SLA-4 libraries, and up to 52 tape cartridges in the 8mm SLA-8 libraries can be accessed in a nominal two seconds or less. MixedMedia Data Interchange Quick and easy data interchange is supported via the front panel-accessible MixedMedia Interchange Drawer. The Drawer can be configured with up to three removable media SCSI SCSI in full Small Computer System Interface Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB. devices to exchange information between the MixedMedia devices and the DataPaks and up to two 3.5-inch fixed disk drives. Multi-Host Access MediaLogic ADL has also recruited a premier group of storage software vendors to add specific features in their applications to take advantage of the innovative capabilities of the SLA technology. As a result, customers can now create advanced storage architectures, such as connecting multiple servers to a single SLA library which allows a shared common data library simultaneous access across several hosts. If one server fails, all library data is still accessible through the second server. Data-ID Feature Every DataPak media carousel now includes the time-saving Data-ID electronic identification feature. These DataPaks are equipped with a chip containing a unique identification code. When the DataPak is first inserted into the library, the host software catalogs the tape cartridges and individual files contained in the DataPak. The next time that DataPak is inserted, the software checks the identification code and matches it against the existing database, eliminating the need to load and initialize To start anew, which typically involves clearing all or some part of memory or disk. every tape cartridge each time a new DataPak is installed in the SLA library. Serial Storage Architecture Serial Storage Architecture - (SSA) IBM's proposed ANSI standard for a standard high-speed interface to disk clusters and arrays. SSA allows full-duplex packet multiplexed serial data transfers at rates of 20Mb/sec in each direction. (SSA) Loop Connection ADL's SLA family of libraries is the first to offer SSA connect. Utilizing Vicom's state-of-the-art Serial Loop Interface Card (SLIC SLIC Subscriber Line Interface Circuit SLIC Scottish Library and Information Council SLIC System Licensed Internal Code SLIC Subscriber Line Interface Card SLIC Session Layer Interface Card (Alacritech, Inc. ) technology -- a high-performance SSA controller that allows native SCSI devices to connect to an SSA loop which boosts data rate performance by up to 300 percent compared to conventional SCSI-based connections. With a unique multi-drive, multi-loader design, all SLA libraries have the capability to service multiple job requests simultaneously. The SLA libraries will respond simultaneously to file requests from both Windows NT and Mac systems. Instead of using a single robot to service requests sequentially, the SLA library can load cartridges into multiple drives in parallel. The library can then send the requested files to the targeted host simultaneously, taking advantage of the dual-ported design of SSA to send two channels of data independently. MediaLogic ADL, with headquarters in Boulder, Colo., is a subsidiary of Massachusetts-based Media Logic Inc. ADL is chartered with creating breakthrough technology in the area of innovative automated data library (ADL) solutions. The design and architecture of the new ADL scalable library products is expected to enhance current applications, enable expanded use of libraries and provide an excellent opportunity for VARs to participate in the profitable emerging market for automated storage solutions.
