ADJUSTMENT HIKES SOCIAL SECURITY FUNDS.

Government checks arriving in the mail today will be slightly higher than last month's for the nearly 1 million Social Security recipients in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County.

As it has done every year since 1975, the Social Security Administration has approved an automatic cost-of-living allowance Noun 1. cost-of-living allowance - an allowance for changes in the consumer price index
allowance, adjustment - an amount added or deducted on the basis of qualifying circumstances; "an allowance for profit"
 - this time it's 2.6 percent.

``It is a modest amount, probably about $22 for the average person,'' said Caroline Cheezum, a Social Security spokeswoman.

The increases are meant to keep up with inflation, Social Security officials said.

While the increase isn't as much as some would like, area seniors say they'll take what they can get.
