hardware platforms Each hardware platform, or CPU family, has a unique machine language. All software presented to the computer for execution must be in the binary coded machine language of that CPU. Following is a list of the major hardware platforms in existence today. See platform.  that ADIVA plans to target include workstations and servers from Sun Microsystems Inc., Silicon Graphics Inc. and IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  (RS/6000) environments.

"We are targeting customers whose businesses rely on internal databases, including applications such as stock data, invoicing data and customer databases," said Uli Meyer, general manager of ADIVA. "The ADIVA RAID-System not only allows us to address classic high-end RAID market applications but to address smaller companies with similar needs that supply customers with high-data-availability storage. HP's AutoRAID array technology is the perfect platform for building cost-effective, fault-tolerant, high-performance storage."

"The European market, thanks to ADIVA, will soon be discovering how easy it is to have the benefits of conventional RAID technology without all of the complications of implementing it," said Gerard (Tex) Schenkkan, marketing manager for HP's Storage Systems Division -- Boise, Idaho. "HP AutoRAID array technology takes the pain out of installing and using conventional RAID technology for users, which really makes their job much easier, and helps ensure that their data will be protected."

ADIVA will be integrating HP's AutoRAID array technology into its line of ADIVA RAID-System products. These products can support up to 12 1-inch-high 3.5-inch disk drives or six 1.6-inch-high drives, two active controllers, two active load-sharing power supplies and three fans. One of the two power supplies supports subsystem power requirements, and only two of the fans are required to provide adequate cooling. The subsystem's disk-drive modules, power supplies and fans are all "hot-swappable," meaning they can be replaced without having to shut down the subsystem or the host. ADIVA RAID-System subsystems can support up to 288GB of capacity when 4GB 1-inch-high disk-drive modules are incorporated in a rack-mounted 19-inch cabinet configuration.

ADIVA, which is based in Bad Homburg, Germany, was founded in 1991 and is known as one of the leading value-added distributors in Europe. The company markets a wide range of products that include servers, workstations, networking hardware and software, printer and mass storage products and personal computers.
