ADIC unveils new DLT storage system with integrated LCD display.

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 13, 1996--In a move designed to provide greater protection for critical network data, ADIC, a division of Interpoint Corp. (NASDAQ NASDAQ
in full National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations

:INTP INTP Introverted Intuitive Thinking Perceiving (Myers-Briggs personality type indicator) ), today announced the immediate availability of its new DS9000D DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line.  tape drive systems, featuring integrated drive status LCD readouts.

Even experienced operators can have a difficult time interpreting the arcane combinations of flashing LEDs used by "blind" tape drives to communicate drive and media status. Misinterpretation of drive status is common, especially for backup systems located at distributed sites where operators are often not trained network administrators. The effects range from the minor -- unnecessary service visits or more support calls -- to the very serious -- increased downtime or lost data. To address these problems, the DS9000D series provides easy-to-understand LCD messages that clearly show drive and media conditions, describe the operations performed, identify error conditions, and recommend maintenance. Messages that require immediate attention, such as directions to clean the drive, are accompanied by a flashing display and a audible alarm.

"One of ADIC's goals is to provide technology that both offers superior data protection and lowers the overall cost of data management," according to William Britts, ADIC sales and marketing VP. "In the case of the DS9000D, that means providing the performance and reliability of DLT, adding the protection and convenience of LCD readouts, and making the package affordable."

The DS9300D offers capacity of 15GB (native), 30GB (average compression) and sustained throughput of 150MB/minute. The DS9400D offers 20GB (native), 40GB (average compression) and 180MB/minute speed. Both are built around Digital Linear Tape (storage) Digital Linear Tape - (DLT) A kind of magnetic tape drive originally developed by DEC and now marketed by Quantum.

drive technology. DLT technology provides high storage capacity and fast data transfer rates, and was designed to solve the problem of rapid data growth within the constraints of today's shrinking backup windows.

The DS9000D products are also among the most reliable on the market, designed to withstand the high duty cycles and stringent reliability and up-time requirements of today's network storage environments. The drives carry an MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) The average time a component works without failure. It is the number of failures divided by the hours under observation.

rating of 80,000 hours of 100 percent duty cycle. The media is rated for 500,000 head passes and approximately 10,000 uses per cartridge. A multilevel error detection and correction (algorithm, storage) error detection and correction - (EDAC, or "error checking and correction", ECC) A collection of methods to detect errors in transmitted or stored data and to correct them. This is done in many ways, all of them involving some form of coding.  scheme produces undetected data error rates of less than one in 10(27) bits read.

In the ADIC DS9000D series, the display is designed to add value without increasing costs over non-display drive systems. The DS9300D, with DLT2000XT drive and integrated LCD, lists for only $4,595.

ADIC's DS9000D series offers easy connectivity to a wide range of hardware and software platforms. It is compatible with all major NLM Software that runs in a NetWare server. Although NetWare servers store DOS and Windows applications, they do not execute them. All programs that run in a NetWare server must be compiled into the NLM format. They are typically written in C and use Novell's libraries.  backup applications for Novell NetWare and with software supporting Windows NT, OS/2, Macintosh and other major operating environments. ADIC is the largest division of Interpoint Corp. (NASDAQ:INTP) with headquarters in Redmond, Wash., and combined 1995 revenues of $71 million. ADIC has been providing storage solutions since its founding in 1983.

It is the leading drive-independent supplier of automated tape storage libraries for client-server networks with over 14,000 units in the field.
