ADIC unveils 20 and 40 gigabyte digital linear tape storage systems.

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 18, 1995--Advanced Digital Information Corp. (ADIC) unveiled its highest capacity and fastest transfer rate single tape storage systems to date.

In making the announcement, Bill Britts, ADIC vice president of sales and marketing, noted that ADIC customers can now get the same high levels of reliability, service and quality in single tape DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line.  systems that they have come to expect from ADIC's DAT (1) (Dynamic Address Translator) A hardware circuit that converts a virtual memory address into a real address.  tape library products.

ADIC's new DS9200 and DS9400 single tape systems are built around the powerful Digital Linear Tape (storage) Digital Linear Tape - (DLT) A kind of magnetic tape drive originally developed by DEC and now marketed by Quantum.

DLT drives implement the Digital Lempel Ziv 1 (DLZ1) compression algorithm in a combination of hardware and firmware.
(DLT) technology from Quantum Corp. With capacities of up to 40 GB per tape and transfer rates of up to 180 MB/min., DLT offers network users the optimal combination of capacity and performance.

The DS9000 series of products was designed in response to customer demands for desktop tape storage solutions that could keep pace with the ever-increasing levels of network data and the limited time available for system backup.

The DS9200 provides native capacity of up to 10 gigabytes per cartridge, while the DS9400 is based on the new 20 gigabyte DLT drives and ATOMM ATOMM Advanced Super Thinlayer and High-Output Metal Media

media technology. On-board data compression doubles the capacity of the DS9200 and DS9400 to 20 and 40 gigabytes, respectively.

As a customer's storage requirements increase, a second DS unit can simply be daisy-chained to the SCSI connector for a fast and easy upgrade.

Along with the very high capacity, ADIC's new DS9000 series tape drives are designed to operate within the constraints of today's shrinking backup windows with some of the best performance available in any tape technology. With compression mode enabled, the DS9200 can back up and restore data at a sustained rate of 150 megabytes per minute; the DS9400 increases that speed to 180 megabytes per minute.

Direct file access capability allows any file on a 20-gigabyte cartridge to be accessed in an average of less than 45 seconds.

The DS9000 series products are also among the most reliable on the market, designed to withstand the high duty cycles and stringent reliability and up-time requirements of today's network storage environments.

The drives carry a mean time between failure rating of 80,000 hours at 100 percent duty cycle. The CompacTape III DLT tape cartridge is rated at 500,000 start/stop passes and approximately 10,000 uses per cartridge, making it up to 100 times more durable than other tape formats.

A multi-level error detection and correction (algorithm, storage) error detection and correction - (EDAC, or "error checking and correction", ECC) A collection of methods to detect errors in transmitted or stored data and to correct them. This is done in many ways, all of them involving some form of coding.  scheme produces data integrity of less than one error in 10(17) bits of data, several orders of magnitude better than competitive tape technologies.

ADIC's DS9000 series storage systems offer easy connectivity to a wide range of hardware and software platforms. The DS products are compatible with all major NLM Software that runs in a NetWare server. Although NetWare servers store DOS and Windows applications, they do not execute them. All programs that run in a NetWare server must be compiled into the NLM format. They are typically written in C and use Novell's libraries.  backup applications for Novell NetWare and with software supporting Macintosh, Windows NT, OS/2 and other environments.

The products are also supported by software applications for the major UNIX UNIX

environments, including SCO (The SCO Group, Lindon, UT, www.sco.com) A leading vendor of Unix operating systems for the x86 platform. SCO had also offered Linux, but abandoned the line in the spring of 2003. The SCO Group is the combination of two companies: Utah-based Caldera, Inc. , IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) IBM's Unix-based operating system which runs on its Intellistation workstations and pSeries, p5, iSeries and i5 server families. , Sun OS and Solaris, HP UX, DEC ULTRIX, Silicon Graphics and AT&T/NCR UNIX.

The DS9200 is available now; DS9400 units will be available in early May. Manufacturer's suggested retail pricing starts at $5,995.

Located in Redmond, ADIC was founded in 1983 to develop and market storage solutions for NetWare and other platforms. These products included Novell co-developed disk subsystems and disk controller boards. ADIC pioneered the use of robotic technology in automating tape backup storage for networks and workstations.
