:ADIC) and VERITAS Software Inc. today announced the support of ADIC's complete line of DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line.  data storage products by the VERITAS Media Librarian (VML (1) (Vector Markup Language) An extension to XML that defines images in vector graphics format for the Web. It also defines how the image is displayed and edited. VML graphics can be modified by style sheets that pertain to the page they reside in. ).

ADIC plans to offer this software package in the first quarter of 1997 for Sun Solaris, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) IBM's Unix-based operating system which runs on its Intellistation workstations and pSeries, p5, iSeries and i5 server families. , HPUX HPUX Hewlett-Packard Unix  and in mid-1997 for Windows NT.

VML is a software tool that brings mainframe-strength media management to open systems. It integrates transparent network access to all media in the enterprise together with a powerful management facility for all optical and tape storage devices and the media used in them. VML provides a set of commands that enable quick and easy adaptive script writing. And it includes versions of UNIX utilities such as tar, dump and pax that allow scripts full control over ADIC automated tape libraries to meet the need for flexible, distributed storage in a heterogeneous server environment.

VML offers optimal flexibility by giving users the ability to share storage resources securely -- including individual library drives -- between different concurrent applications. The product is designed to operate simultaneously with existing backup, HSM (1) (Hierarchical Storage Management) The automatic movement of files from hard disk to slower, less-expensive storage media. The typical hierarchy is from magnetic disk to optical disc to tape.  software and vertical media applications.

"Coupled with ADIC's DLT storage products, VML will, for the first time, allow users to take advantage of standard backup utilities with a full range of DLT storage products, including ADIC's multiple drive Scalar libraries," according to Peter Levine, VERITAS marketing vice president.

"VML will save time and money for end-users by allowing them to share storage devices between applications and across heterogeneous networks," according to Jonathan Otis, ADIC director of product management. "It represents a major advance in the management of distributed network storage devices and media."

VML supports ADIC's complete family of DLT storage devices. These include the DS9000 series standalone drive subsystems with integrated LCD drive-status, the seven-cartridge VLS DLT compact libraries, and the Scalar series of multiple drive desk-top and mid-range DLT libraries. All ADIC DLT products have optional 19-inch rack mount configurations and are available with a choice of DLT2000XT, 4000 or 7000 drives. ADIC libraries offer up to 3.36 TB capacity and up to 1200MB/minute native transfer speed. The newly released Scalar 218 dual-drive library, winner of the WindowsNT Magazine Technology Award, offers an industry-leading 18 DLT cartridges in a compact desk-top or rack-mount library.

VERITAS Software designs, develops and markets enterprise storage management and high availability products for business-critical computing systems. VERITAS products are licensed as source products to more than 50 OEMs worldwide.
