ADIC announces DAT libraries will more than double throughput by integrating new Sony SDT-7000 drive.

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 11, 1995--ADIC today announced that it will double the data transfer rate of its existing family of DAT (1) (Dynamic Address Translator) A hardware circuit that converts a virtual memory address into a real address. See also DAT file.

(2) (Digital Audio Tape) A magnetic tape technology used for backing up data.
automated tape libraries by integrating Sony's new, high speed SDT-7000 DDS-2 drive as an option in ADIC's tape storage products.

The new products will allow current users of DAT technology to achieve more than 100% increases in data throughput using existing media and formats.

The newly introduced Sony SDT-7000 drive will increase the rated sustained throughput to 778KB/second (native) and 1556 KB/second (compressed) by doubling the speed at which the drive's drum head rotates. The higher transfer rate is more than twice that of existing DDS-2 drives and faster than current 8mm technology. The SDT-7000 reads and writes standard DAT media using DDS-1 or DDS-2 format and provides a total per cartridge storage capacity of up to 4GB native, 8GB compressed. The new drive offers an MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) The average time a component works without failure. It is the number of failures divided by the hours under observation.

MTBF - Mean Time Between Failures
of 200,000 hours and an uncorrected error rate of 1 in 1015 bits read. The new drive also includes Sony's patented Super Head Cleaner mechanism which automatically cleans the drive head after every 15 minutes of use.

"The most common storage problem we see network administrators facing today is achieving data transfer rates high enough to complete backup operations during limited time windows," according to according to

William Britts, ADIC Sales and Marketing vice president. "The Sony SDT-7000 represents a fundamental technology advance which will help solve that problem for all users of our DAT products. ADIC's long technical relationship with Sony's development team has made rapid integration of the new drive possible, and will make the technology available rapidly to a wide market. We expect to have products using the SDT-7000 drive in full production before the end of 1995."

ADIC plans to offer single and dual-drive desktop automated tape libraries featuring the new drive during the 4th quarter of 1995. Models with SDT-7000 drive options will include the ADIC 1200 library series, which offers 12-cartridge magazines (96GB total capacity), and the VLS VLS Virtual Library System

ADIC has been providing storage solutions since its founding in 1983. It is the leading drive-independent supplier of automated tape storage libraries for client-server networks with over 10,000 units in the field. ADIC products are available with 4mm (DAT), 8mm, and DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers.
