ADIC and Seagate Software Announce Certification Of ADIC Scalar 1000 With Seagate Backup Exec Fibre Channel San Solution.

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif./REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 19, 1999--

-- High Bandwidth Storage Area Network Backup Provided by the

Combination of FibreReady(tm) Tape Library and Seagate Backup Exec Backup Exec is backup software for Microsoft Windows environments currently developed by Symantec. Backup Exec has a long history of being sold from one company to another.

Seagate Software Seagate Software was an international software corporation headquartered in Scotts Valley, California. It was a majority owned subsidiary of Seagate Technology, the largest independent disc drive and related components company in the world. , the leading provider of storage management solutions for Microsoft Windows See Windows.

Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  Workstation operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. , and ADIC (Nasdaq:ADIC), the leading drive-independent supplier of automated tape libraries, today announced that the ADIC(R) Scalar(R) 1000 has been certified with Seagate Backup Exec Shared Storage Option for Windows NT.

The combination of Seagate Backup Exec Shared Storage Option with the ADIC Scalar 1000 DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line.  tape library offers customers a powerful, end-to-end Fibre Channel Storage Area Network (SAN) solution that provides greater performance, efficiency and fault tolerance See fault tolerant.

"In working with significant hardware vendors such as ADIC, Seagate Software is able to offer customers powerful SAN solutions that support the growing market of Fibre Channel technology," said Michael Colemere, vice president of product management and business alliances, Seagate Software, Network and Storage Management Group. "With the ADIC Scalar 1000 and Seagate Backup Exec Shared Storage Option, customers are provided with a SAN solution that significantly improves backup performance and makes data storage management more efficient."

Seagate Software has tested and approved end-to-end configurations for leading Fibre Channel SAN hardware vendors. These rigorous tests result in a configuration that seamlessly works in a Fibre Channel SAN environment and includes certification of the ADIC Scalar 1000 with Seagate Backup Exec for Windows NT with Shared Storage Option.

"SAN technology dramatically increases backup performance and at the same time protects IT managers' technology investment," said Jonathan Otis, vice-president of product management, ADIC. "Working together, Seagate Software and ADIC are bringing the concrete benefits of FibreReady(tm) backup to the Windows NT enterprise, including faster performance, more efficient use of resources and more centralized data management."

ADIC Scalar 1000

Available in FibreReady(tm) configurations, the Scalar 1000 combines the speed, capacity and reliability of leading tape technologies with an architecture that scales economically to fit changing storage needs. The Scalar 1000 offers capacity from 6TB to over 80TB for 6 to 48 tape drives by dynamically expanding the size of its modular cabinet. Modular expansion eliminates the need for pass-through ports and allows the Scalar 1000 to always operate as one integrated library with one robotic system robotic system An integrated system of devices that automate production and manufacturing of goods and services Surgery An AI-based surgical assistant system, which processes sensory input from haptic interfaces and/or allows surgeons to act with more accuracy than , even with four (the maximum) modules connected. With support for either DLT or AIT technology and integrated FibreReady(tm) connectivity, the Scalar 1000 is ideally suited for being utilized as a shared enterprise storage resource in a centralized Storage Area Network with Seagate Backup Exec Shared Storage Option.

Seagate Backup Exec Shared Storage Option

Seagate Backup Exec Shared Storage Option leverages the benefits of a Fibre Channel SAN, including increased backup performance, centralized management, reduced impact on network users, consolidation of storage devices, superior efficiency, scalability and lower total cost of ownership. Within a SAN, backup traffic no longer needs to pass over the main network, but is off-loaded to a separate, confined SAN. A dedicated Fibre Channel - Arbitrated Loop A ring topology used in Fibre Channel. Up to 127 devices may be attached in the loop, but only two can communicate at the same time, reflecting the channel nature of Fibre Channel technology.  within a SAN provides the flexibility to run backup operations more frequently, instead of restricting backups to off-peak network times. As a result, business productivity increases as network users no longer need to compete with the backup data traffic for network bandwidth.

Seagate Backup Exec Shared Storage Option is currently available with a U.S. suggested retail starter pack A starter pack (or starter deck) is a sealed package of cards or figurines, designed to serve as the beginning of a collection, in collectible card games and collectible miniature wargames.

Starter packs usually contain a fairly large number of items.
price of $4,995 (including support for two licenses of Seagate Backup Exec Shared Storage Option and two shared tape drives) through Seagate Software's global network of TeamExec reseller and distribution partners. Additional Seagate Backup Exec Shared Storage Option components are available for each incremental server and additional tape drive. Seagate Backup Exec Shared Storage Option also requires the purchase of Seagate Backup Exec for Windows NT (v7.2 or greater).
