ADIC Scalar Libraries Selected for Microsoft Corporate Data Centers.

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 15, 1999--

Company Purchases More Than 150 Scalar 218 Tape Libraries,

Nearly 200 TB of Capacity, for Installation in Data Centers

Advanced Digital Information Corporation (Nasdaq:ADIC) today announced that Microsoft Corporation (company) Microsoft Corporation - The biggest supplier of operating systems and other software for IBM PC compatibles. Software products include MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows, Windows NT, Microsoft Access, LAN Manager, MS Client, SQL Server, Open Data Base Connectivity (ODBC), MS Mail,  (Nasdaq:MSFT MSFT Microsoft (stock symbol)
MSFT Movimento Sociale Fiamma Tricolore (Italy)
MSFT Multi-Stage Fitness Test
MSFT Master of Science in Family Therapy
MSFT Macalester Students for Fair Trade
) has selected ADIC Scalar tape libraries for backup in Microsoft's Redmond and Tokyo corporate data centers.

Microsoft has deployed more than 150 of the dual-drive Scalar 218 DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line.  tape libraries, which are used in conjunction with Veritas Software's Backup Exec Backup Exec is backup software for Microsoft Windows environments currently developed by Symantec. Backup Exec has a long history of being sold from one company to another.  software to form a complete, distributed backup solution. The combined capacity of the deployed libraries is nearly 200 terabytes.

"We're pleased that Microsoft has chosen to expand its use of ADIC tape libraries," commented Bill Britts, ADIC executive vice president of sales and marketing. "Given the large number of IT departments who use ADIC storage products to backup their Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  systems, it seems appropriate for the same products to serve as the standard data protection solution at Microsoft's Redmond and Tokyo data centers."

Microsoft has chosen to configure each of the Scalar 218 units with two DLT7000 tape drives. Together they provide a maximum sustained throughput rating for each library of up to 72GB per hour. Eighteen data cartridge (1) A cartridge used to hold computer data. See cartridge.

positions in each library provide a capacity of 1.26TB.

Scalar 218 libraries feature a unique split-bus connectivity system to better take advantage of the library's rapid data transfer ratings. The Scalar 218 offers a barcode reader See bar code reader.  for rapid media inventory and automated media tracking and a media import/export mailbox to allow easy import and export of tape cartridges while the system remains under software control. The unit is designed to fit on a tabletop, but can also fit easily into the 19-inch racks commonly used in data centers for Windows NT servers and peripherals.

The same Scalar 218 platform is also available with an integrated Fibre Channel connection to make it possible to leverage the unit's high transfer rate for installation in Storage Area Network (SAN) applications.

The DLTtape drives that read and write the data inside the Scalar 218 tape library are the current standard for server backup throughput client-server computer systems. The technology's combination of capacity, reliability, and performance has propelled it to a leadership position among tape technologies used to protect data on network servers. The Scalar 218 libraries use DLT7000 drives today, but are designed to allow easy upgrade to newer DLT drive technology as it becomes available.
