To convert to automatic operation: automate a factory. 2. tape libraries for over 40 United States Marine Corps United States Marine Corps (USMC) Separate military service within the U.S. Department of the Navy (see U.S. Navy), charged with providing marine troops for seizure and defense of advanced bases and with conducting operations on land and in the air in connection with (USMC) network centers around the world. The contract, valued at nearly $1,000,000, is for three different models of the company's Scalar scalar, quantity or number possessing only sign and magnitude, e.g., the real numbers (see number), in contrast to vectors and tensors; scalars obey the rules of elementary algebra. The ADIC Scalar series of automated tape libraries comprises over a dozen separate models that offer desktop to data center capacity ranges for all of the major open system tape formats -- LTO (Linear Tape Open) A family of open magnetic tape standards developed by HP, IBM and Quantum (formerly the Certance subsidiary of Seagate) that are licensed to third-party vendors. LTO cartridges contain a memory that stores historical usage data. , AIT, and DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line. . The award-winning Scalar libraries have had several industry firsts: They were the first to announce integrated Fibre Channel connectivity to allow their direct use in Storage Area Networks (SANs); the first independent libraries to announce support for both AIT and LTO Ultrium technology; and the first to offer low-cost, high performance barrier-free scalability to the mid-range tape storage market. The AIT2 tape technology selected for the USMC data protection installations provides a powerful combination of capacity, transfer rates, density, and reliability.
