ADIC Pathlight VX Series Extends LTO-3 to Disk-Based Backup; Leverages New Technology to Help Users Manage Growth and Control Costs; Adds Support for IBM 3584 Tape Libraries.

REDMOND, Wash. -- Advanced Digital Information Corporation (Nasdaq:ADIC), the leader in Intelligent Storage(TM) solutions for the open systems market, today announced that its Pathlight VX(R) series of disk backup solutions has expanded its list of supported tape technologies to include third-generation LTO (Linear Tape Open) A family of open magnetic tape standards developed by HP, IBM and Quantum (formerly the Certance subsidiary of Seagate) that are licensed to third-party vendors. LTO cartridges contain a memory that stores historical usage data.  Ultrium (LTO-3) tape drives and media. The support means that Pathlight VX's virtual libraries can emulate em·u·late

LTO-3 drives and media, and can also send backup data stored on its disk to physical tape libraries with LTO-3 drives over an integrated path to tape. This announcement marks the first virtual tape library A hard disk array that emulates a tape library. A virtual tape library (VTL) enables the storage medium to be switched from tapes to disks while continuing to use the existing tape backup software. See virtual tape system and storage virtualization.  with a high performance, integrated tape path to support LTO-3 drive technology. ADIC(R) also announced that its Pathlight VX series solutions will expand their list of supported tape libraries to include the IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  3584 with LTO Ultrium drives.

"Although LTO-3 more than doubles throughput and capacity over second-generation drives, many IT departments will have to change architectures and upgrade their backup servers A computer in a network used to store copies of files from client machines or other servers. Such servers typically have their disks set up in a RAID configuration to provide fault tolerance. See backup program, RAID, SAN and LAN free backup.  to be able to leverage the new technology," commented Scott Roza, ADIC Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "For many users, ADIC's Pathlight VX solutions provide a much more attractive alternative."

With Pathlight VX, users' existing servers can maximize their performance by writing directly to disk during the backup window at each server's optimal rate. Then, Pathlight VX writes that data to a tape library over a dedicated high speed path, sending data to the library's LTO-3 drives at streaming rates. The result is faster and more fault tolerant The ability to continue non-stop when a hardware failure occurs. A fault-tolerant system is designed from the ground up for reliability by building multiples of all critical components, such as CPUs, memories, disks and power supplies into the same computer.  backup and restore that uses fewer physical tape drives and fewer pieces of media, without requiring that users redesign re·de·sign

"With up to 800 GB per cartridge and 160 MB/sec throughput, LTO-3 is important technology for our customers because it gives their backup systems Noun 1. backup system - a computer system for making backups

a way to keep up with the growth of data and continue to drive down costs," said Mr. Roza. "This is critical as users require dependable and secure protection for the full lifecycle of their data, including short-term file retrieval, system-wide disaster recovery, and long-term data retention in support of regulatory requirements Regulatory requirements are part of the process of drug discovery and drug development. Regulatory requirements describe what is necessary for a new drug to be approved for marketing in any particular country. ."

With today's statement, ADIC also announced it would add the IBM 3584 tape library to its list of tape libraries supported by Pathlight VX solutions. Pathlight VX can provide integrated tape creation with ADIC Scalar scalar, quantity or number possessing only sign and magnitude, e.g., the real numbers (see number), in contrast to vectors and tensors; scalars obey the rules of elementary algebra. Many physical quantities have scalar values, e.g. (R) 24, Scalar(R) 100, Scalar(R) 1000, Scalar(R) i2000, and Scalar(R) 10K libraries, along with legacy StorageTek L180 and L700 models.

About Pathlight VX

Pathlight VX disk backup solutions merge the performance and reliability of disk with the value, capacity, and portability of tape in a single system. Pathlight VX solutions present disk capacity as a tape library to applications, so they fit easily into traditional backup and restore processes. They also create physical tapes through an integrated process that takes place outside the backup window and off users' backup SANs and servers to provide flexible disaster recovery and long term retention. Pathlight VX is offered in two models: the fixed capacity Pathlight PV 450 for mid-range environments, and the scalable Pathlight VX 650 for enterprise data centers.
