ADIC Joins Legato Systems' Open Celestra Architecture for SANs; Celestra Consortium Unites Storage Industry Leaders to Deliver SAN Applications.

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 26, 1999--

Advanced Digital Information Corporation (ADIC) (Nasdaq:ADIC) today announced that it has joined the Celestra Consortium, a new organization promoting an open and integrated architecture for effective data movement and management of Storage Area Network (SAN) environments.

The Celestra Consortium, founded by Legato Systems, provides a forum for facilitating the adoption of open-systems technology and increasing the efficiency of SAN integration. The Consortium is designed to encourage rapid development of interoperable SAN solutions.

"The future of high bandwidth storage is in SANs," commented Jonathan Otis, ADIC vice president of product management, "and in integrating products like high performance serverless data transfer into SAN solutions that retain all of the flexibility inherent in open systems. By founding this consortium to bring together a wide spectrum of the storage industry, Legato is providing an important service. The Celestra Consortium will help ADIC integrate its FibreReady(TM) tape libraries and SAN networking products into storage solutions that give our customers better performance, lower administration overhead, and better data security."

"The Celestra Consortium will help ensure that leading-edge solutions developed by industry leaders like ADIC will seamlessly work together to make managing data easier throughout an entire enterprise," said Paul JJ Payack, Legato vice-president of Worldwide Marketing. "With data growth rates now exceeding 100 percent annum, IT managers are demanding the integrated solutions that Consortium companies are developing to make serverless and LAN-free backup a reality today."

In addition to offering a forum for solving interoperability issues, the Celestra Consortium offers members tools and support to help them implement the SCSI SCSI

Extended Copy specification, a key element in making high performance serverless data transfer a reality. Included in the tools are a "test tool kit" and a joint certification and marketing support program, which helps consortium members bring robust, interoperable solutions to market quickly and efficiently.

About the Celestra Consortium

The Celestra Consortium was kicked off at an introductory meeting in Monterey, Calif. on June 15 and 16, 1999. The founding members of the consortium have demonstrated a strong commitment to SANs and solution interoperability and are considered the leading vendors in this market. They include 3PARdata, ADIC, Amdahl, Ancor, ATL (Active Template Library) A set of software routines from Microsoft that provide the basic framework for creating ActiveX and COM objects. About Legato Celestra

Legato's Celestra introduced an open, distributed architecture that optimizes data movement efficiency in SAN environments. Data movement is performed by an intelligent SAN device that complies with the open standard SCSI Extended Copy specificationdeveloped by the Storage Networking Industry Association An association of producers and consumers of storage networking products, whose goal is to further storage networking technology and applications. The Storage Networking Industry Association, or SNIA  (SNIA (Storage Networking Industry Association, San Francisco, CA, www.snia.org) An organization devoted to the advancement of mission critical storage systems. Founded in 1997, its goal is to determine the standards that must be developed to allow hosts and storage systems to interact via ). Data movement intelligence is provided by Legato Celestra agents, enabling powerful applications such as serverless, outboard backup that eliminates the backup window. Control is provided by Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP (Network Data Management Protocol) An open standard for backing up data in a heterogeneous environment. Developed by Network Appliance and IntelliGuard Software, NDMP uses a common data format which is written to and read from drivers for the specific disk and )-compliant control applications such as Legato NetWorker. This open standards approach means maximum customer ROI (Return On Investment) The monetary benefits derived from having spent money on developing or revising a system. In the IT world, there are more ways to compute ROI than Carter has liver pills (and for those of you who never heard of that expression, it means a lot).  and operational efficiency.
