ADIC INTRODUCES 30GB DLT STORAGE LIBRARY SYSTEM WITH 50% INCREASED CAPACITY AND LIBRARY UPGRADE PATH.REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 3, 1995--ADIC today announced the introduction of the DS9300, a new 30GB single cartridge tape storage system which uses an upgraded DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line. drive to increase storage capacity by 50% over existing models. With its increased capacity and up to 150MB per minute sustained data transfer, the DS9300 provides a tape backup and archiving solution matched to today's high performance servers and workstations. Because it is designed as part of ADIC's integrated family of DLT tape storage products, the DS9300 also provides an easy and low cost upgrade path for users who expect future data capacity increases. The drive from the DS9300 can be easily integrated into one of ADIC's automated tape libraries to provide the security of a fully automated backup system and a seven-fold increase in total storage capacity. ADIC's DS9300 is built around the fast growing Digital Linear Tape (storage) Digital Linear Tape - (DLT) A kind of magnetic tape drive originally developed by DEC and now marketed by Quantum. DLT drives implement the Digital Lempel Ziv 1 (DLZ1) compression algorithm in a combination of hardware and firmware. (DLT) technology from Quantum Corp. The new product uses Quantum's newly released DLT 2000XT drive -- an upgrade to the DLT 2000 drive which is used in ADIC's DS9200 tape system. The new DS9300 model can read and write the same media as the 2000 drive (DLT CompacTapeTM III) and operates identically with existing software. However, when used with the DLT CompacTapeTM III XT media, the DS9300 increases compressed per-cartridge storage capacity from 20GB to 30GB (uncompressed capacity is 10GB and 15 GB respectively.) The DS9300's high data transfer rate is designed to solve the problem of the shrinking backup window that network administrators are facing as they see LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. data increasing at 50 to 60% per year. The DS9300 transfers data at 150MB/minute, 2-1/2 times faster than 8mm tape products. It also provides direct file access capability which allows any file on the 30GB cartridge to be accessed in approximately 60 seconds, making the DS9300 a powerful tool for HSM and imaging applications. The DS9000 Series products are among the most reliable on the market, designed to withstand the high duty cycles and stringent reliability and up-time requirements of today's network storage environments. The drives carry a mean time between failure rating of 80,000 hours at 100 percent duty cycle. The DLT CompacTape(TM) III XT cartridge is rated at 500,000 head passes and approximately 10,000 uses per cartridge. A multi-level error detection and correction (algorithm, storage) error detection and correction - (EDAC, or "error checking and correction", ECC) A collection of methods to detect errors in transmitted or stored data and to correct them. This is done in many ways, all of them involving some form of coding. scheme produces undetected data error rates of less than one in 1030 bits read. ADIC's DS9300 offers easy connectivity to a wide range of hardware and software platforms. It is compatible with all major NLM backup applications for Novell NetWare and with software supporting Windows NT, OS/2, Macintosh and other major operating environments. The product is also supported by software applications for the major UNIX UNIX Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics). environments, including SCO UNIX, IBM AIX, Sun OS and Solaris, HP UX and Silicon Graphics IRIX A Unix-based operating system from SGI that is used in its computer systems from desktop to supercomputer. It is an enhanced version of Unix System V Release 4. IRIX integrates the X Window system with OpenGL, creating the first real time 3D X environment. . The DS9300 is available now. Manufacturer's suggested retail is $6,995. ADIC has been providing storage solutions since its founding in 1983. It is the leading drive-independent supplier of automated tape storage libraries for client-server networks with over 10,000 units in the field.
