ADIC Announces Industry's First Fibre-Channel Tape Library.

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 9, 1997--

Dual-Drive DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line.  Library Plugs Directly into Fibre-Channel

:ADIC), a leading data storage supplier for client/server networks, announced today the industry's first Fibre-Channel automated tape library, the Scalar 218FC.

The new DLT-based tape library can be connected directly to Fibre-based Storage Area Networks (SANs) to provide users with all the benefits of Fibre-Channel technology, including high bandwidth, gigabit-per-second link speed, flexible connectivity and long-distance data transfer.

"We developed the industry's first Fibre-ready tape library because we believe that Fibre-Channel SANs represent a significant step toward solving the problems of storing, protecting and recovering data in spite of 100 percent per year network data growth," said Jonathan Otis, ADIC director of product management. "Not only does Fibre-Channel technology offer exceptionally high bandwidth, it can dramatically lower administrative overhead by making it easier to add and change storage devices without shutting down networks. And its capacity for long distance data transfer at full speed will open up new possibilities for data centers, disaster-recovery planning and remote backup."

Fibre-Channel technology is the emerging technology of choice for organizations building Storage Area Networks (SANs) to manage and protect exponentially increasing amounts of data. SANs link together disparate servers and storage products, including tape libraries, disk drives and optical libraries, for higher bandwidth, easier management and better scalability.

About the Scalar 218FC

The Scalar 218FC design is based on ADIC's award-winning Scalar 218 DLT tape library. It comes equipped with two Quantum DLT7000 tape drives and 18 cartridge positions, providing storage for up to 1.26 terabytes of data and sustained native data transfer rates of 10 MB/sec (5 MB/sec per drive). The unit provides native support for ANSI (American National Standards Institute, New York, www.ansi.org) A membership organization founded in 1918 that coordinates the development of U.S. voluntary national standards in both the private and public sectors. It is the U.S. member body to ISO and IEC.  FC-PH FC-PH Fibre Channel Physical  4.3 and ANSI FC-AL (Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop) See Fibre Channel.

The 218FC offers a barcode reader See bar code reader.  and a media import/export mailbox as standard features, and comes in configurations for tabletop or rack installation. Configuration, diagnostics and manual operation, including loading/unloading of cartridges and drives, are easily controlled from a menu-driven keypad. The Scalar 218FC offers multiple cabling options for a wide range of data transfer distances. For installations within 30 meters of the nearest Fibre-Channel source, the unit is available with copper cabling. , Windows NT, and NetWare operating systems. The 218FC will be compatible with more than 30 of the leading storage management software packages that currently support ADIC's SCSI-protocol Scalar libraries.

Availability

The Scalar 218FC will be available in production quantities in Q4 1997. In the U.S. and Canada, the 218FC will ship with a three-year warranty and a full year of on-site service.
