ADE STARTS TURF WAR; IRISH RACING NEWS.

Byline: PETER O'HEHIR

TURF War proved a shock winner of the featured Guinness Handicap Hurdle HURDLE, Eng. law. A species of sledge, used to draw traitors to execution.  on day five of the Listowel Festival.

Trained by Michael Hourigan and ridden by teenager Adrian Heskin, the 20/1 shot got the better of the flattering Tramp Stamp by a head to record his fourth win of the season.

''We were second in the Kerry National with Church Island yesterday. And this makes up for it,'' declared Hourigan, after greeting the five-year-old he trains for Michael O'Leary's Gigginstown House Stud stud

Hourigan added: ''He ran some race in Ffos Las the last day, when he was a bit free and got there too soon. But he's been a great servant this summer and will make a nice chaser, although that probably won't be until next season.'' And asked about the future of 17-year-old winning rider Heskin, he explained, ''Adrian is very young and, for the moment, I'm only letting him ride for myself. He'll probably make a jockey

''Adrian could be very good. He has a great racing brain. And it's a treat to watch him riding.'' A little free in the early stages, the six-year-old, a four-time winner over hurdles, was allowed to stride on into the lead by Paddy Flood and, with the exception of a couple of minor mistakes, jumped soundly before beating Lucky Wish and Gonebeyondrecall.

McNamara described the gelding gelding

as ''a lovely prospect'' before adding: ''He made one or two slight mistakes but, overall, jumped very well, which is encouraging. He's done plenty of schooling over the last few weeks.

''He's slightly better going right-handed. And, because he's a light, lean horse, he needs time between his races. So you won't see him again for at least six weeks. Hopefully, he's a horse with a big future.''

On The Other Hand, pulled up in his last two starts over fences, enjoyed his return to hurdling in the three-mile Devon Inn Hotel Handicap Hurdle.
