Prosecutors said Shaw was under the influence of methamphetamine when his vehicle ran a red light at Sunland and Glenoaks boulevards in Sun Valley and crashed into one carrying Alec and his mother.

Shaw, who has a criminal record, including a conviction for possession of a controlled substance controlled substance n. a drug which has been declared by federal or state law to be illegal for sale or use, but may be dispensed under a physician's prescription. , had been enrolled in a voter-approved rehabilitation program for drug offenders at the time of the crash.

Shaw's attorney, Michael Brush, said the crash has brought anguish to the defendant's family as well as the victims'.

``This case has a sad impact on all of the families. Some members of the family of the victims did hug the fiance of the defendant'' during Wednesday's hearing, he said.
