The Citizens Transportation Advisory Committee will hold a public meeting Monday at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall, 23920 Valencia Blvd., where members will discuss traffic problems and how to alleviate some of them by making the roadways more attractive to bicyclists.

plan,'' said city traffic engineer Bahman Janka. ``The objective is to provide bicycle lanes on lots of roadways.''

But cyclists face mounting competition from motorists who clog city streets and need additional traffic lanes. The city plans to convert several four-lane roads into six-lane thoroughfares, leaving cyclists without room for bike lanes. Among those roads are Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. ``The bicyclists are between a rock and a hard place,'' said cyclist John Lukes, who said the city's off-road trails aren't suitable for serious bicyclists.

``It's a hazard for us to be on the bicycle and pedestrian paths with kids on bikes and in strollers,'' Lukes said. ``The only thing we have is to educate drivers that we can use the road.''

City Councilwoman Jan Heidt wants to preserve as many bikeways as possible, especially on Sierra Highway where cyclists share traffic lanes.

``We don't need to cut off Sierra Highway,'' she said. ``It's the last major road which provides you with bikeways.''

Sierra Highway doesn't have formal bike lanes, but rather extra-wide lanes that enable cyclists to comfortably share the road with vehicles. At next week's meeting, the transportation committee will discuss roads that can accommodate bike lanes only if existing traffic lanes are eliminated.

The group also will examine the possibility of the city acquiring additional rights of way on future roads to accommodate bike lanes. The city General Plan discourages bike lanes on streets, such as Valencia Boulevard, because of heavy traffic.
