THE NATURE COMPANY ANNOUNCES AUSTRALIA EXPANSION AND TOKYO STORES;
 AUSTRALIA -- NEW HORIZONS; JAPAN -- CONTINUED EXPANSION
 BERKELEY, Calif., June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Nature Company, a nature-oriented specialty retailer based in Berkeley, is pleased to announce that they have recently signed a letter of intent with a company in Australia to open retail stores and distribute mail order catalogs.
 Plans call for a total of four stores to be completed by the end of December 1992, three in Melbourne and one on the Gold Coast south of Brisbane. At this time, two of the Melbourne stores have already been opened. Four additional stores are planned for 1993.
 Founder Priscilla Wrubel said recently, "The environmental movement in Australia is very popular. It's clear that our commitment to increasing appreciation of the natural world, and their awareness and commitment to facing environmental challenges will be a perfect match. We're very pleased with our partners, the exciting customer response to the two existing stores, and look forward to growing with them in the future."
 The Nature Company's Australia stores will closely duplicate their domestic retail concept and preserve the company's Mission Statement: to provide fine quality products devoted to the observation, understanding and appreciation of the natural world. Japan: Continued Expansion
 The Nature Company has grown significantly since its beginnings in 1973 Berkeley. As of June 1992, the chain boasts 76 stores nationwide. In other international areas, the company has opened their second Tokyo store in a Tobu department store, in what is the largest department store in Asia. It is located near the Ikebukuro train station, which handles 2.8 million passengers every day. This will bring the total to seven Nature Company stores in Japan, with plans to open three to four additional stores in the next year.
 The Nature Company's wide range of products includes graphic and fine arts, children's discovery toys, telescopes and binoculars, natural history books, gifts, music, sculpture, bird feeders, nature-inspired clothing and literally thousands of other products. Free nature discovery events are offered in every store throughout the country. Because of the company's "code of ethics," shoppers won't find products such as seashells, butterflies, furs or mounted animal specimens that have resulted in the killing of animals for trophy purposes.
 For the fiscal year ending July 1991, The Nature Company posted sales of $90 million, with projected sales of $115 million for the year ending July 1992.
