A city panel gave preliminary approval Thursday to citizens commission recommendations that would create five City Council districts and two school board districts wholly within the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

``The citizens commissions told us loud and clear that we need to increase the representation of the Valley residents by increasing the number of districts that are in the San Fernando Valley,'' said Councilman Jack Weiss Jack Weiss, is a member of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 5th district. Weiss was elected in 2001 and reelected in 2005. The 5th district includes parts of the Westside and the San Fernando Valley. , who chairs the panel.

Under the proposals, the fifth Valley council district would be in the Central Valley and would involve moving the district now represented by Councilwoman Ruth Galanter Ruth Galanter was a city councilwoman from Los Angeles. She served as President Pro-Tempore and President of the city council.  from the Venice-Westchester area.

On the school board, the second Valley district would involve moving the district represented by board member Julie Korenstein into the East Valley, with board member Caprice ca·price

Currently, the Valley has four whole council districts out of 15 with more than one-third of the city's residents and only one whole school district.

Public hearings are planned over the next several weeks on the two plans. The first is scheduled for next week in Westchester.

The two citizens commissions were formed to recommend new political boundaries, one working on Board of Education districts and the other dealing with council districts. By law, remapping occurs at 10-year intervals to account for population shifts reflected in the U.S. Census.
