Will Deliver 52,000 Pounds of Food & Emergency Supplies To Grenada

Diageo, the world's leading premium drinks company, will sponsor a humanitarian airlift tomorrow to deliver 52,000 pounds of food and emergency supplies to Hurricane Ivan victims in Grenada.

"Today we are grateful to help restore hope to those whose lives might seem hopeless, to bring aid in their time of need and work together in rebuilding their communities and lives," said Conrado Niemeyer, General Manager, Diageo Caribbean.

The mission, called, "The Diageo Spirit of the Americas," will depart tomorrow, September 11 at 8:30 a.m. from AmeriJet International Airlines, located at 3401-A NW 72nd Avenue in Miami.

Diageo enjoys an esteemed relationship with Grenada and contributes to the country's economy. Diageo brews Guinness Foreign Extra Stout under contract at Carib Brewery in Grenada, and has a longstanding partnership with Brydens & Minors, which represent brands such as Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff and Tanqueray.

"On behalf of the nearly 30,000 Diageo employees worldwide who make Guinness and Johnnie Walker Black, we are honored to be able to deliver assistance to the people of Grenada. The emergency supplies include milk powder, beans, vegetable oil, rice, infant formula and protein supplement. It is our hope that these nutritional and emergency provisions will help bring hope and health to people who have been struck by this terrible calamity," said Menezes.

This airlift is part of Diageo's on-going humanitarian efforts. In December 2001, Diageo delivered the first corporate humanitarian planeload plane·load

 of food and emergency supplies to orphans in Kabul, Afghanistan. Last June, the company chartered a DC-8 plane and brought a cargo of food, medicine and school supplies to Baghdad, becoming the first corporate humanitarian mission in Iraq. More recently, Diageo has provided electricity generators to Florida victims of Hurricanes Charley and Frances and sent a similar "Diageo Spirit of the Americas" Airlift to Dominican Republic and Haiti after the flood disaster in June. Last November, Diageo stepped in to ensure that more than 72,000 disadvantaged families would enjoy Thanksgiving dinner by contributing 12,000 turkeys to the Connecticut Food Bank The Connecticut Food Bank is a food bank headquartered in East Haven, Connecticut.
