eighth-grader Meghan McRae won the Chuck Stoll Award trophy and $250 as the student with the best cumulative score over three years of competition.

``I'm really excited because I didn't think I did that well. I'm just really happy,'' Meghan said.

Along with the $250, Meghan gets to take the Chuck Stoll Award trophy to her school, which will keep it for a year. The award is named for the high school mathematics teacher who started the annual contest.

``We want to encourage young kids to get an interest in math, and this gives them a chance to see what high school is like,'' teacher and organizer Scott Nevison said.

The competition drew more than 500 students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades from 20 public and private schools, and it was held over three days in the Palmdale High School gymnasium gymnasium

Amargosa Creek students said they found team competition easier than the individual contests.

``I think it was a lot of fun because we didn't just sit down and do math. We had games in the middle, and we could talk to each other,'' said Corinne Brierly, Amargosa team captain.

Among small-schools teams of eighth-graders, Sacred Heart took first and third places; Buena Vista tied for second and took fifth place; Edwards Middle School tied for second and took sixth; and St. Mary's, fourth place.

Individual honors for an eighth-grader from a large school went to Jesse Cheung of Amargosa Creek, whose counterpart in small schools was Kathryn Updyke of Buena Vista.
