ADDING MULTIMEDIA Staples Launches New Line of Shredders Offering Customers Worldwide Advanced Technology, Improved Performance and Greater Security.

New line debuts at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas January 8

LAS VEGAS -- At the Consumer Electronics Show, Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLS), the world's largest office products company and leading retailer of shredders, today announced the global launch of a new line of shredders built with the latest technology and exclusive, innovative features. The shredders will hit Staples store shelves beginning February 2009, with availability at both Staples retail stores and Staples.com. This line was created through a partnership with TTI Co. Ltd., a recognized leader in high performance technology and the manufacturer of Ryobi[c], Hoover[R] and Milwaukee[R] products.

The new Staples shredders were built to provide customers with the highest performance features available on the market, including durability, speed, compactness and stylish design. These shredders feature exclusive new technologies that improve overall performance while delivering quality and value for businesses, home offices and individuals.

New features include:

Technology

* V-Track[TM]: Advanced blade technology that centers paper while shredding - preventing jams, evenly distributing paper waste and improving blade performance.

* Titanium Cutters: Exclusively available on the high performance shredders in the Staples line, these durable, sharp blades ensure top shredding performance.

* Anti-Jam with Smart Sense[TM] Technology: Innovative technology detects when too much paper is inserted and prompts the user before shredding starts to prevent jamming.

Shredder sizes

* Compact: When space is at a premium, small enough for a cubicle, home office and even a kitchen countertop

* Full size: Tucks neatly into corner for shredding large jobs, but never out of reach

Shred types

* Micro cut: Staples smallest cut designed for maximum security and ultra-quiet operation

* Cross cut: Enhanced security cut that delivers secure shredding

Safety

* Lockout key: Removable key that prevents unauthorized shredder use

* Blade Guard: Safely covers blades when not in use

Design

* Modern Style: Polished stainless steel accents complement the smooth black shredder body

* Bottom-empty bin: Release button allows bin to be emptied neatly from the bottom, instead of cumbersome dumping

Staples, the official shredder supplier for the CES Press/Analyst Room (January 6-11, 2009), is debuting the new line to allow media attendees to experience the new shredders and their exclusive features and technology first hand. CES is produced by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the preeminent trade association promoting growth in the consumer technology industry.

"The 2009 Consumer Electronics Show is a great opportunity to introduce the world to Staples' new family of shredders," said Dan Paterson, Director, Staples Brand Group. "The new line offers the latest advanced technology, security protection and increased performance that meet customers' personal and business needs."

Staples' new shredder line includes the follow high value, stylish models:

* MailMate M5 Shredder ($89.99)

* 10-Sheet Crosscut Shredder ($99.99)
