-- the Showcase of Artists featured performers representing almost every art form and culture of the world. Hands-on workshops, visual displays and dozens of musical performances served to excite and educate hundreds of students from throughout Los Angeles County and remind local educators and elected officials about the importance of making arts education a priority in Southern California schools.

"Arts education faces many critical challenges in large part because of limited funding and shifting priorities," said Mark Slavkin, vice president of the Education Division of the Los Angeles Music Center. "The Music Center Education Division's Showcase of Artists provides a unique opportunity to consider and discuss the issues facing arts education today. By bringing together a large community of arts education advocates, artists and educators are able to share resources and expertise and explore potential partnerships for the next school year."

During the event, Slavkin moderated a panel discussion featuring key players from Farragut Elementary School in Culver City. The discussion allowed them to share effective strategies for supporting arts education and providing children with a rich background on a wide variety of arts disciplines.

Slavkin continued, "The Music Center Education Division, through events like Showcase, is committed to giving children hands-on opportunities to experience the excitement of the performing and visual arts. Having the opportunity to see, and be a part of, live performances is a crucial part in the development of every child."

The artists who performed at today's Showcase event are available to travel to schools to help teachers and students develop quality arts education programs. The event was made possible by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, Farmers Insurance Group, and the National Endowment for the Arts National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)
