New Volume Manufacturing Site for Tunable Lasers Announced;

Product Demonstrations Available

ADC (Nasdaq:ADCT; www.adc.com), a leading global supplier of fiber optics, network equipment, software and integration services for broadband, multiservice networks, today announced the completion of its new manufacturing site in Jarfalla, Sweden. In addition, ADC announced that it will feature its new tunable laser along with the full line of optical components and fiber connectivity equipment at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibit (OFC) 2002 in Anaheim, Calif., March 17 - 22.

Vertically Integrated Manufacturing Facility Opens in Sweden

With its new facility fully online in Jarfalla, Sweden, ADC becomes the world's first optical component maker with the ability to manufacture tunable lasers in volume for commercial use. All steps in the manufacturing process, from wafer fabrication through final packaging, qualification and reliability testing are accomplished at the new facility, enabling quality and performance to be fully tested and managed by ADC. The state-of-the-art facility is able to manufacture tunable lasers in quantity, ensuring more control, quality and reliability of products. ADC can now manufacture more effectively and better meet customer demand for components. The facility employs more than 150 people.

Optical Components Featured at OFC

On Tuesday, March 19, ADC will announce the availability of its new tunable laser, the Anywave(TM) NYW-60-B. The new tunable laser and other ADC optical components will be on display at booth number 3500. In the booth, ADC will provide live product demonstrations of both the NYW-60-B tunable laser and 980 nanometer pump laser. In addition, ADC will display optical components including its Optical Tap Monitor (OTM), which combines a broadband thin film tap filter with a hermetically sealed custom InGaAs photo-detector. The integrated OTM replaces a separate tap/splitter and pigtailed photodiode, reducing overall package size while offering superior spectral response. These wavelength flattened in-line devices are ideally suited for power monitoring in a DWDM system. Subsea couplers, collimaters, isolators, and inline filters will also be on display in ADC's booth.

Connectivity Products Designed for Optical Networks

ADC's Connectivity Business Unit is also displaying a variety of fiber products at OFC. The LX.5(R) connector, for example, allows two fibers instead of one to fit into the standard SC adapter footprint - doubling the density of fiber termination equipment. The innovative small-form-factor (SFF) connector was developed with carrier-class reliability to promote network integrity and customer satisfaction. In addition, ADC's fiber management trays, FiberGuide(R) Fiber Management System and family of Next Generation Frame (NGF) cable management products designed to provide higher density while improving fiber cable management, are featured.

Presentations by ADC

ADC engineers will also present three technical papers at OFC. On Thursday, March 21, Devin Crawford, senior principal design engineer, will present Design and Performance of the 980 nm Pump Laser Modules Exhibiting Greater Than 400 mW Kink-Free Fiber Coupled Power, at 11:30 a.m. in room 303A-D. Also, on March 21, Roger McGowan, senior principal design engineer, will present Dual Bragg Grating Frequency Stabilization of a 980 nm Diode Laser, at 5:30 p.m. Finally, on March 21, reliability specialist Ylva Gustafsson, will present Frequency Stability of Widely Tunable GSCR Laser, in poster sessions from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
