MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 26, 2000

Telcordia Deploys NewNet IP CALEAserver(TM)

in the Telcordia(TM) Call Agent

(Nasdaq: ADCT ADCT Adaptive Discrete Cosine Transform ; www.adc.com) announced today that its NewNet IP CALEAserver application has been selected by Telcordia Technologies Telcordia Technologies, formerly Bell Communications Research, Inc. or Bellcore, is a telecommunications research and development (R&D) company based in the United States and created on January 1 1984 as part of the 1982 Modification of Final Judgment that broke up . Under the terms of the three-year software license and reseller agreement, Telcordia will deploy NewNet IP CALEAserver with the Telcordia(TM) Call Agent in packet-switched networks to meet federally mandated CALEA CALEA Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (Fairfax, Virginia)
CALEA Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act of 1994
CALEA Communication Assistance to Low Enforcement Act
(Communications Assistance to Law Enforcement Act) requirements.

CALEA requires wireless and wireline telephone carriers to upgrade their networks to provide court-ordered intercepted call content and call identifying information to law enforcement agencies A law enforcement agency (LEA) is a term used to describe any agency which enforces the law. This may be a local or state police, federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).  (LEAs) by June 30, 2000 for circuit-switched and September 30, 2001 for packet-switched communications networks.

ADC is a leading supplier of CALEA-compliant lawful intercept platforms and offers three distinct solutions: NewNet CALEAserver(TM) and NewNet CDCmanager(TM) for circuit-switched networks, and NewNet IP CALEAserver for packet-switched networks. These products support simultaneous delivery of intercepted information of a single target to up to five LEAs.

The NewNet IP CALEAserver solves the need for a Next Generation Network element to handle lawful intercept functionality. It performs the duties of a TIA (1) (Telecommunications Industry Association, Arlington, VA, www.tiaonline.org) A membership organization founded in 1988 that sets telecommunications standards worldwide. It was originally an EIA working group that was spun off and merged with the U.S.  J-STD-025 defined Delivery Function, by receiving the intercepted communications data from various packet-switched network elements, processing it to conform to Verb 1. conform to - satisfy a condition or restriction; "Does this paper meet the requirements for the degree?"
fit, meet

coordinate - be co-ordinated; "These activities coordinate well"
the requirements of J-STD-025, and then distributing it to the appropriate LEA collection facilities. The product's scalable system architecture supports up to 1,000 simultaneous intercepts, 128 access points (such as call agents), and 128 collection functions.

The Telcordia(TM) Call Agent is at the technological core of a Next Generation Network solution, serving as a Class 5 switch alternative and providing all of the intelligence for call control features and functions. NewNet IP CALEAserver works in harmony with the Call Agent to offload wiretapping A form of eavesdropping involving physical connection to the communications channels to breach the confidentiality of communications. For example, many poorly-secured buildings have unprotected telephone wiring closets where intruders may connect unauthorized wires to listen in on phone  activities from the Call Agent. By separating these duties, the Call Agent is better able to focus on call processing In telecommunication, the term call processing has the following meanings:
  1. The sequence of operations performed by a switching system from the acceptance of an incoming call through the final disposition of the call.
activities and other network responsibilities. The Telcordia Call Agent is one of the first "softswitches" in production with deployments at a North American North American

NewNet IP CALEAserver combines the delivery and administration functions in one platform running on UNIX-based industry standard, telco hardened computing servers. Other system capabilities include: security; built-in trouble shooting tools/utilities; local and remote support; and operations, administration and maintenance tools. Not only does NewNet IP CALEAserver comply with J-STD-025, but it also addresses the requirements of the PacketCable Consortium. The second phase of the solution will include interfaces to the packet mode transport network elements, such as the cable modem termination systems and trunking gateways to deliver call content to the LEA.

"Our alliance with Telcordia is another step in our commitment to bring CALEA-compliant solutions to our customers. ADC is first to market with a CALEA-compliant solution for the packet-switched networks 18 months ahead of required compliance. Our NewNet IP CALEAserver provides operators and switch manufacturers with a reliable, cost-effective solution that is scalable for both small and large networks," said Grant Wakelin, president of ADC's NewNet Division. "As a leading SS7 middleware and enhanced services platforms provider, we are now taking our expertise in telephony applications into the Next Generation Network".

"We have successfully completed acceptance testing (programming) acceptance testing - Formal testing conducted to determine whether a system satisfies its acceptance criteria and thus whether the customer should accept the system.  of NewNet IP CALEAserver against our live Call Agent. Our lab tests have proven our combined solution to be ready for the Next Generation Network. We will start deploying NewNet IP CALEAserver with our Call Agent this summer. The NewNet IP CALEAserver works out-of-the box, and we expect our deployments to be smooth," said Pat Donnelly, executive director of Advanced Network Systems Product Management at Telcordia.

ADC's NewNet IP CALEAserver and other CALEA-compliant solutions will be featured in the ADC booth at the Rural Cellular Association (RCA See RCA connector and video/TV history. ) 8th Annual Convention and Exhibition (Booth No. 303/305) in Las Vegas, Nevada, April 25-28.

ADC's NewNet Division is a leading supplier of global telecommunications software for the convergence of voice and data communications in wireless, wireline and next generation networks. The NewNet product line consists of SS7 platforms commercially deployed in over 45 countries, as well as short messaging and over-the-air service provisioning solutions, SS7-IP gateways and Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act The Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) is a United States wiretapping law passed in 1994 (Pub. L. No. 103-414, 108 Stat. 4279). In its own words, the purpose of CALEA is:
