(Nasdaq:ADCT ADCT Adaptive Discrete Cosine Transform ; www.adc.com) a leading global supplier of fiber optics, network equipment, software and integration services for broadband, multiservice networks, today announced the general availability of ADC's IP CALEAserver and the Telcordia(TM) Call Agent to support CALEA requirements for voice over packet (VoP) networks. ADC and Telcordia have signed a three-year software license agreement in which Telcordia will offer the IP CALEAserver with Telcordia(TM) Call Agent.

The Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act The Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) is a United States wiretapping law passed in 1994 (Pub. L. No. 103-414, 108 Stat. 4279). In its own words, the purpose of CALEA is:

(CALEA) requires wireless and wireline telephone carriers to upgrade their networks to provide court-ordered intercepted call content and call identifying information to law enforcement agencies A law enforcement agency (LEA) is a term used to describe any agency which enforces the law. This may be a local or state police, federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). . The federal mandate deadline is November 19, 2001, for packet-switched communications networks. The Federal mandate deadline for circuit-switched networks was June 2000.

"Capturing voice content and data recordings has become increasingly important to law enforcement agencies and the fact that ADC's IP CALEAserver is ready now to support both call content and call data is a milestone in the industry," said Dave Opsahl, president of ADC's Enhanced Services Division. "We can now provide the solution for exchange carriers and cable companies that deliver IP-based services on packet-switched networks."

The IP CALEAserver solves the need for a Next-Generation Network element to handle lawful intercept functionality. It receives the intercepted communications and distributes them to the appropriate law enforcement agency Noun 1. law enforcement agency - an agency responsible for insuring obedience to the laws

collection facilities. The Telcordia Call Agent, serving as the Class 5 switch alternative, provides all of the intelligence for call control features and functions.

"As federal law enforcement agencies accelerate their timeframes to expand intercept capabilities, it's vital that the standards are defined for Next-Generation Networks," said Pat Donnelly, executive director, Next Generation Networks, Telcordia Technologies. "The ADC and Telcordia offering gives service providers a reliable solution that is scalable for large and small networks."

The intercept platform solution was recently purchased by a major U.S. carrier and is scheduled for initial deployment in their network before the end of the year.

ADC, a member of the International Softswitch Consortium and an active participant in industry standards bodies (TIA (1) (Telecommunications Industry Association, Arlington, VA, www.tiaonline.org) A membership organization founded in 1988 that sets telecommunications standards worldwide. It was originally an EIA working group that was spun off and merged with the U.S. , ETSI), is considered a world class leader in intercept platforms.
