ADC and Efficient Networks Achieve DSL Interoperability.

Business Editors & Technology Writers

DALLAS & MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 11, 2000

Efficient Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:EFNT), and ADC (1) See A/D converter.

(Nasdaq:ADCT ADCT Adaptive Discrete Cosine Transform ; www.adc.com), a leading global supplier of network equipment, software and integration services for broadband multiservice networks, today announced the two companies have successfully demonstrated interoperability between ADC's recently announced iAN platform and Efficient Networks' SpeedStream(R) USB modem A modem that plugs into the USB port of a computer. It typically refers to a V.92 analog modem, but might refer to a DSL modem. See USB, V.92 and DSL. .

The interoperability tests were performed to demonstrate iAN's interoperability with digital subscriber line See DSL.

iAN is the industry's first real-time programmable DSL-based multi-service gateway, allowing end-users to set and change their own specific bandwidth and Quality of Service (QoS) levels with the click of a mouse on a personalized, home-page interface. Customers served by an iAN-equipped network can alternate between low cost, modest bandwidth capabilities and high-performance connectivity for use with the most demanding of applications, such as full-motion DVD-quality video streaming See streaming video and video stream. .

DSL modem ADSL modem or DSL modem is a device used to connect a single computer or router to a DSL phone line, in order to use an ADSL service. The acronym NTBBA (network termination broad band adapter, network termination broad band access) is also common in various countries.  provides fast connectivity for telecommuters, residential consumers and laptop users. It is the first in the SpeedStream family of broadband access devices to be tested for interoperability with iAN in ADC's labs. Both companies plan to test interoperability between the iAN platform and additional members of the SpeedStream product line.

According to David Goldschmidt, a vice president for ADC's marketing and product management in ADC's Broadband Access and Transport Group, the test went as expected. "We experienced excellent results in the interoperability lab with Efficient's SpeedStream product," said Goldschmidt. "Efficient's residential access device achieved maximum specified ADSL See DSL.

speeds and met the G.dmt test loops requirements, making the device a good fit with our high-performance iAN environment. Interoperability between general network architecture and a wide range of customer premises equipment is essential to all companies involved in launching broadband services."

"One of the hallmarks of our SpeedStream products is the ability to operate with multiple carriers and their latest technological advances," said Mike Fox, vice president and general manager of Residential Access for Efficient Networks. "Achieving interoperability with ADC's iAN platform represents another milestone in continuing the leadership position of the SpeedStream product line."
