The contract, worth approximately $12 million, will play significantly in MediaOne's strategy to upgrade approximately 12,000 miles of plant over the next three years. This upgrade is expected to pass 838,000 homes and businesses, servicing approximately 514,000 subscribers.

MediaOne intends to collapse 12 of its headends into two headends. AVS equipment will be installed in both headends and in 42 nodes, each of which will ultimately serve 20,000 homes or businesses with 500 home nodes providing 750 MHz of bandwidth and 40 MHz of reverse path capability for voice, video and data services.

"This contract is important to AVS for several reasons: it is the most aggressive, contiguous system rebuild ever undertaken, it gives us the chance to work with RBOCs and traditional cable MSOs together in the same environment and it also gives us the opportunity to install a platform which will migrate into a full-service network," said Carleton Brown, ADC (1) See A/D converter.
