ADC To Supply Digital Transmission System for China Video Backbone; ADC Estimates Potential Value at $14 Million Over 2 Years.

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 8, 1995--ADC Telecommunications Inc., announced today that China's Hunan Post & Telecommunications Administration will purchase its DV6000(TM) digital transmission system from the company's joint venture, Shanghai ADC Telecommunications Equipment Co., Ltd.

This contract is the largest cable TV equipment purchase order to date for China, according to the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications. In phase 1 of the network build, 14 cities in the Hunan province will be connected, representing a population of 65 million people.

In December 1994, ADC announced a 20-year joint venture agreement with Shanghai Posts & Telecommunications Equipment, Ltd. (STE), to form Shanghai ADC Telecommunications Equipment Co., Ltd. The equally owned and funded joint venture company is licensed to manufacture and market ADC Video Systems fiber-optic transmission equipment, including the DV6000 system and the Homeworx(TM) video system.

ADC's joint venture with Shanghai Posts & Telecommunications Equipment, Ltd., produces the company's digital and analog video transport systems for China and Southeast Asia. Ameritech, SNET and Viacom Cable also use ADC's DV6000 digital video transmission system in their video networks.

The ADC DV6000 digital transmission system, which operates at 2.4 Gbps and simultaneously transports up to 16 channels of digitized broadband traffic, is completely modular, supporting diverse network configurations and multiple video formats. DV6000 networks may include multiple sites with channel drop/add/pass capability spanning hundreds of kilometers overall.

The Homeworx platform transports both digital and analog broadband signals, as well as narrowband telephony and data services over a hybrid fiber/coax architecture to residential and small business customers. By installing the Homeworx HFC access platform, a service provider is well positioned to add telephony and data services in the future. The platform is being deployed by or has been in field trials with Ameritech, Cable Bahamas, Comcast, Nynex, Optus Vision, Rochester Telephone, SNET and Time Warner.
