(Nasdaq:ADCT ADCT Adaptive Discrete Cosine Transform ; www.adc.com), a leading global supplier of fiber optics, network equipment, software and integration services for broadband, multiservice networks, today announced the availability of the company's first G.shdsl compliant Customer Premises Equipment See CPE.  (CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) Communications equipment that resides on the customer's premises.

to consumers and bring the benefits of DSL to enterprise networks quickly and easily.

Infonetics Research projects a 53% quarterly compound growth rate for G.shdsl-based CPE through 2004(a), so ADC's MM701G addresses a rapidly growing market opportunity. The MM701G uses standards-based G.shdsl technology to offer superior rate, reach and compatibility, combined with advanced bridging and internetwork routing capabilities. It also bolsters ADC's comprehensive line of CPE, which includes a variety of DSL-based modems, IAD's, bridges and routers designed for consumers, businesses and carriers.

When used with ADC's Avidia Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer A Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) allows telephone lines to make faster connections to the Internet. It is a network device, located near the customer's location, that connects multiple customer Digital Subscriber Lines (DSLs) to a high-speed Internet  (DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor) A central office (CO) device for ADSL service that intermixes voice traffic and DSL traffic onto a customer's DSL line. It also separates incoming phone and data signals and directs them onto the appropriate carrier's network. See DSL. ) System, or other G.shdsl compliant DSLAM, the MM701G creates new market opportunities for service providers by expanding current carrier service areas (CSA (1) (Canadian Standards Association, Toronto, Ontario, www.csa.ca) A standards-defining organization founded in 1919. It is involved in many industries, including electronics, communications and information technology. ) by up to 47 percent, compared to existing DSL solutions. This enables service providers to reach more customers with a greater variety of revenue-generating services based on DSL. Functioning in back-to-back mode, the MM701G gives enterprise networks increased performance and security with applications that extend connectivity throughout a private network environment.

"The Megabit Modem 701G enables all ADC customers, whether carriers or corporate users, to use the benefits of the latest in broadband connectivity for a host of applications," said John Frederick, vice president of marketing for ADC's DSL Division. "In addition to the product's outstanding versatility, the 701G is the market leader in ease of use, thanks to our advanced, Easy Session web-based installation and configuration software."

Unlike other DSL CPE, the MM701G automates and simplifies even the most complicated set up tasks - particularly for IP-based network configuration - with the inclusion of Easy Session software. Whether provisioning subscribers for high-speed data services or setting up a secure VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks. , Easy Session intuitively guides the user through a menu-driven procedure that quickly and easily establishes broadband connections.

"ADC's modems are very popular with our customers, and we expect the MM701G to exceed that current success," said Bruce Girouard, national product manager for Graybar, an authorized ADC distributor. "CPE are typically `me-too' products, because they are based on standardized technology. But the MM701G clearly sets itself apart from the competition with Easy Session software that makes it incredibly simple to use."

The MM701G includes all the great features of G.shdsl, which is projected to be the dominant DSL technology for carriers and enterprise networks going forward. When carriers use the MM701G with the Avidia System, they enjoy the added ADC benefits of StarGazer stargazer, common name for any of several species of marine fishes of the family Uranoscopidae, found in southern waters, and having the mouth, nostrils, and eyes set high in the head. Stargazers lie buried in the sand, waiting for their prey of small crustaceans.  Element Management Software, including full in-band CPE management plus a built-in Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. ) agent for remote management.

For IP-based applications, the MM701G features a G.shdsl interface for external connections; a 10Base-T Ethernet port with MDI/MDI-X switch for local connection; support for bridging/routing and PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) The most popular method for transporting IP packets over a serial link between the user and the ISP. Developed in 1994 by the IETF and superseding the SLIP protocol, PPP establishes the session between the user's computer and the ISP using  over ATM; up to 32 distinct connections to the Internet even to different Internet Service Providers; and advanced protocol support for internetworking, including Network and Port Address Translation (networking) Port Address Translation - (PAT) A function provided by some routers which allows hosts on a LAN to communicate with the rest of a network (such as the Internet) without revealing their own private IP address. , Domain Name System server and Dynamic Hosting Configuration Protocol.

G.shdsl is the preeminent DSL technology for delivering symmetrical bandwidth and is capable of reaching bi-directional transmission speeds up to 2.3Mbps. G.shdsl features greater rate/reach performance; rate selectability; optimum spectral compatibility; automated multi-rate negotiation/adoption; low latency; two-wire transmission and low power consumption. G.shdsl is the only standards-compliant symmetrical DSL technology, conforming to ITU-T See ITU.

ITU-T - International Telecommunications Union
 Recommendation G.991.2.

The MM701G is competitively priced at $695 and is available today through authorized ADC distributors. Contact ADC at 800-366-3889 in North America for reseller information or call any local ADC office.
