ADC Provides PCS Transport Solution To Pacific Bell Mobile Services; Soneplex intelligent DS1 service delivery system provides economical, single-source solution for the "last link" to cell sites.

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 24, 1996--ADC Telecommunications, Inc., today announced that it is providing an integrated personal communications services See PCS.  (PCS (1) (Personal Communications Services) Refers to wireless services that emerged after the U.S. government auctioned commercial licenses in 1994 and 1995. ADC's specially customized transport and delivery equipment will link PBMS cell sites with local exchange carrier (LEC (1) (LAN Emulation Client) A software driver that provides LAN emulation (LANE) in an ATM network. The contract is valued at several million dollars.

is deploying its Soneplex(R) intelligent DS1 service delivery system to provide an economical and reliable last link in PBMS's wireless network. The Soneplex system integrates the company's digital transport technology and DS1 service delivery capabilities. Alternative solutions considered by PBMS required multiple systems to address the network's fiber and copper requirements, making ADC's solution cost-efficient as well as space-efficient.

The Soneplex intelligent DS1 service delivery system's digital transport technology facilitates fiber (6.3 Mbps), high bit-rate digital subscriber line (communications, protocol) High bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line - (HDSL) A form of Digital Subscriber Line, providing T1 or E1 connections over two or three twisted-pair copper lines, respectively.  (HDSL See DSL.

) and T1 transport. A single transport package can send up to four DS1s from the local exchange carrier to each cell site over fiber or copper. The Soneplex DS1 service delivery capability is used to transport DS1 traffic to the PBMS cell sites. Each DS1 delivery system can feed seven cell sites optically and/or 28 cell sites over copper.

In providing equipment to PBMS for its PCS network, ADC was faced with three major challenges -- facilitating DS1 service over both copper and fiber; adhering to limited equipment space in the cell sites' outdoor cabinets; and providing built-in performance monitoring capabilities. "The key to meeting PBMS's challenges was having the flexibility and the equipment to design a package that addressed their special engineering requirements for cell site transport," said William L. (Lonnie) Martin, president of the Network Services Division at ADC. "Based on the required customization, ADC is the only company that could offer PBMS a complete, integrated single-vendor solution."

In addition to meeting the copper and fiber challenge with its transport package, ADC also designed special craft/performance monitoring (CPM) and alarm processor unit (APU APU Azusa Pacific University

) modules for the PBMS application. Each module is fabricated with a special electrical converter to allow it to be used in the outside plant cabinet. A custom 400 style mounting was created for HDSL and T1 modules; mounting brackets for two T1 channel service units were fabricated; a custom fiber splice/termination panel was developed; and a custom access panel was built to address physical space limitations. All optical links are protected with full facility redundancy.

"ADC was instrumental in the successful implementation of our PCS network infrastructure," said John Baker, vice president of network technology at PBMS. "This project demonstrates how invaluable equipment manufacturers like ADC can be when they provide not only the products necessary to do the job, but also the services and expertise required to understand exactly what a customer's needs are and how to best meet them."

The Soneplex intelligent DS1 service delivery platform offered by ADC's Network Services Division is an integrated loop transmission system that enables public network providers to deliver T1, T3, E1 and other high-speed services from their networks to customer premises over copper or fiber facilities. ADC's Soneplex DS1 service delivery platform, with its variety of plug-in modules, employs electrical-to-optical conversion for transport of voice, data and video over fiber facilities and HDSL transmission technology for transport of high bandwidth services over copper-based systems. Soneplex products also integrate circuit performance monitoring and test capabilities.
