ADC Leverages Engineering Expertise to Create FTTP Solutions; Equipment Designed for Fiber Networks Helps Carriers Meet Growing Demand for Broadband.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 22, 2004

With a long history in developing fiber optic network equipment and services for communication service providers around the world, it was a natural for ADC (1) See A/D converter.

(Nasdaq:ADCT ADCT Adaptive Discrete Cosine Transform , www.adc.com) to add new fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP (Fiber To The Premises) The installation of optical fiber from the carrier directly into the home or office. Also called "fiber to the home" (FTTH). See PON and FTTC. See also FTP. ) offerings to its mix of connectivity products. Enclosures that contain equipment needed to split, distribute and manage fiber cables are critical pieces of the new network communications providers will deploy to provide true broadband services to their customers.

FTTP initiatives will allow signals to travel at the speed of light on a fiberoptic network - enabling service providers to deliver broadband services to their customers quickly and cost-effectively. ADC's new FTTP offerings fit into these newly designed network architectures and will help manage the voice, video, data, and Internet traffic Internet traffic is the flow of data around the Internet. It includes web traffic, which is the amount of that data that is related to the World Wide Web, along with the traffic from other major uses of the Internet, such as electronic mail and peer-to-peer networks.  traveling on fiber optic cables Noun 1. fiber optic cable - a cable made of optical fibers that can transmit large amounts of information at the speed of light

"The response to our new FTTP equipment has been very positive," said Tom Kampf, director of fiber solutions for ADC's Connectivity Business Unit. "Some companies are changing their architecture in order to use our products, which ultimately saves them money. ADC has years of experience designing and building equipment for the central office and outside plant. The new equipment enables carriers to reduce network costs and increase revenues right now with new broadband services."

ADC FTTP Products

FTTP equipment designed by ADC offers telecommunications service providers A Telecommunications Service Provider or TSP is a type of Communications Service Provider that has traditionally provided telephone and similar services. This category includes ILECs, CLECs, and mobile wireless companies.  flexibility in managing their FTTP equipment, including the expensive central office based electronics, used to transmit the signals to the individual homes. This ability to optimize the infrastructure enables service providers to leverage their investment and drive revenue generation. ADC's new FTTP products include:

Fiber Distribution Terminals: Pole- or slab-mount cabinets that feature a pre-terminated architecture with ample connector access and slack storage, splice trays, splitter modules, and bend-radius protection for all fibers managed in the cabinet. The cabinets are offered in various sizes accommodating 32 to 1,152 homes per cabinet and are designed to meet Telcordia specifications.

Passive Optical Splitter Modules: Designed for the outside plant or central office, these modules give carriers the ability to split optical signals to multiple homes or businesses. Installed in the Fiber Distribution Terminal cabinet, the modules enable quick and efficient routing and splitting of individual fibers.

Wavelength Division Multiplexer Modules: These modules are primarily used in CO fiber panels and frames, enabling carriers to mux and demux optical signals to combine video with voice and data. Modules are available in adaptor port or pigtailed pig·tail

ADC and Sumitomo Electric formed an alliance in 2003 to develop and engineer FTTP connectivity equipment for use within major telecommunications service provider networks. The alliance offers the collective products - augmented by the engineering, field, and manufacturing expertise - of the three market leaders to bring a customizable and flexible connectivity solution to telecommunication service providers.

"Our relationship with Sumitomo Electric has benefited both companies," said Kampf. "The ideas and expertise we've shared in the development of these products enables us to bring an offering to our customers that other companies will find hard to match."

It is estimated that $1.5 - 3.5 billion will be spent annually by telecommunications service providers during the next five years as FTTP networks are deployed in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. New FTTP projects initiated by carriers and municipalities have increased by more than 87 percent since 2000 and states like California and Washington lead the country with more than 90,000 homes accessible to new fiber networks.
