The AAC-3 product line is part of the second generation of ADC Kentrox ATM WAN access products. The company has been shipping other ATM access products since 1993. "ADC Kentrox continues to hold a leadership position in the network access arena. The ability to deliver products that are on target, on time and function as specified is their strong suit," noted John Coons, Principal Analyst with Dataquest. "With its innovative architecture and advanced service management capabilities, the AAC-3 is sure to make the short list of products to consider for ATM WAN access and service distribution." Announced in March 1995, the AAC-3 participated in domestic and international trials this summer and fall. During the trials it was tested for interoperability and standards compliance with major ATM LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. and WAN switching products, ATM and non-ATM routers, video and PBX (Private Branch eXchange) An inhouse telephone switching system that interconnects telephone extensions to each other as well as to the outside telephone network (PSTN). equipment. It was also verified in various service environments, including Frame Relay A high-speed packet switching protocol used in wide area networks (WANs). Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers. and SMDS (Switched Multimegabit Data Service) A high-speed, switched data communications service offered by the local telephone companies for interconnecting LANs in different locations. It was introduced in 1992 and became generally available nationwide by 1995. . The AAC-3 is the first commercially available ATM WAN access device of its type on the market. "Early orders for the AAC-3 are coming from customers in the U.S., Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, Germany and Switzerland," commented Alex Dobrushin, Vice President of Marketing at ADC Kentrox. "These customers represent major markets that have made a commitment to the ATM infrastructure. We are pleased that they have selected the AAC-3 to rapidly and economically deploy ATM throughout their networks." Applications The principle objective of the AAC-3 is to facilitate rapid migration of traffic and services to the newly deployed ATM transmission and switching infrastructure. The AAC-3 provides an economical access solution for the end users seeking to transport a variety of non-ATM and ATM traffic over carrier and private ATM networks. The service adaptation and interworking (standard) interworking - Systems or components, possibly from different origins, working together to perform some task. Interworking depends crucially on standards to define the interfaces between the components. functionality of the AAC-3 also allows telecom carriers to economically deliver a variety of services, including Frame Relay, SMDS and leased lines from their new ATM infrastructure. The ability to easily cost in the AAC-3 for both large and entry-level networks is expected to accelerate general deployment of ATM. Last month ADC Kentrox introduced additional AAC-3 configurations and a joint technology exchange with FORE Systems, a worldwide leader in high performance local area networking products based on ATM technology.
